Count Nikolay Rumyantsev ( Russian Николай Петрович Румянцев in older German literature frequently. Romanzow ; born April 3 jul. / 14. April  1754 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † January 3 jul. / 15. January  1826 greg. Ibid) , Son of Pyotr Alexandrovich Rumjanzew-Sadunaiski , was a Russian statesman.

From 1779 to 1796 he was an authorized minister in Frankfurt am Main and after Alexander I's accession to the throne, he was Minister of Commerce and Chief Director of Water and Road Construction. In 1807, Count Rumyantsev was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs and soon afterwards Chancellor. He accompanied the Tsar to Erfurt in 1808 , where he met with Napoleon. He concluded the Peace of Frederikshamn with Sweden on September 17, 1809 . In 1811 Count Rumyantsev met Alexander von Humboldt , whom he invited to an expedition to Siberia. The expedition did not take place until 1829, after Nikolai's death.

When he received news of Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, Count Rumyantsev suffered a stroke and lost his hearing, after which he withdrew from public life. He equipped the ship Rurik at his own expense for a trip around the world, which took place from 1815 to 1818 under the leadership of Lieutenant Otto von Kotzebue . In Nikolai's honor, one of the islands discovered on this trip was given the name Romanzow (today: Wotje , Marshall Islands 9 ° 26 ′ 30 ″ N, 170 ° 1 ′ 0 ″ E ).

Count Rumyantsev was an avid collector and built a museum, which was brought from St. Petersburg to Moscow in 1861 and formed the basis for the Rumyantsev Museum . The Russian State Library emerged from the library . He also collected materials on Russian history and wrote numerous historical and literary treatises himself. Since 1822 he was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In 1817, Alexander I had a colossal statue of peace erected by Antonio Canova in memory of three generations of Rumyantsev.
