Willy Holt (born November 30, 1921 in Quincy , Florida , United States , † June 22, 2007 in Paris , France ) was an American-French art director and production designer .

Life

After his parents divorced, his mother , who came from France , returned to her homeland with him. He graduated from high school ( Baccalauréat ) in Toulouse . In December 1943 he was arrested as a member of the French Resistance at Grenoble train station and deported to Auschwitz via the Drancy concentration camp . He survived the death march from Auschwitz to Buchenwald , where he was liberated on April 13, 1945.

Holt began his career in cabaret and circus . When he came to France to film , he first worked for John Frankenheimer , Robert Parrish and Stanley Donen . In 1966 he directed the film Is Paris Burning? by René Clément . He later worked for Louis Malle , Roman Polański ( Bitter Moon , 1992), Fred Zinnemann , Woody Allen , Arthur Penn , Otto Preminger and Bertrand Blier , among others .

In 1987 he received a Cesar for his outfit from Louis Malles Goodbye, Children . Holt died in Paris in June 2007 at the age of 85 .
