I'll Find a Way is a Canadian documentary - short film of director Beverly Shaffer from the year 1977 . He was awarded an Oscar .

action

The film is about the nine-year-old Nadia DeFranco, who suffers from spina bifida and can only move on crutches. He accompanies her for a week and shows how she copes with everyday life at school and in the family.

background

The film is part of the Direct Cinema documentary series Children of Canada , produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) , the episodes of which portray Canadian children in various circumstances. It was shot in color on 16mm . The location was Toronto . It premiered on December 6, 1999 at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival .

In 1999 Beverly Shaffer produced the sequel Just a Wedding , in which Nadia DeFranco marries a man she met over the Internet. In contrast to I'll Find a Way , there are also recreated scenes.

reception

Thomas Waugh, Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University , discussed I'll Find a Way at Cinema Canada in 1978 . First of all, he criticized the “hype” that the NFB's publicity department made about the leading actress after the Oscar ceremony, and secondly AMPAS’s long-standing ignoring of good documentaries from its studio . However, he judges, "the Oscar couldn't have happened to a nicer film" (German: The Oscar could not have happened to a nicer film . ) And praises the restraint and intelligence of the film and Shaffer, who avoids sentimentalism despite the emotional topic . He particularly emphasizes Nadia DeFranco's achievement, from whose perspective the story of the film is told with self-confidence and without self-pity. He compares I'll Find a Way with the Oscar-winning short documentary film Thursday's Children .
