British Academy Film Awards 1983
The 36th British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place in London in 1983 . The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) film awards were presented in 21 categories; there was also a special and an honorary award category. For the first time, BAFTAs were awarded in the categories of Best Non-English Language Film , Best Animated Short Film , Best Mask , Best Song and Best Visual Effects . The event honored films from 1982 .

Award winners and nominations
With 16 nominations, Richard Attenborough's Gandhi on the life and death of Mahatma Gandhi was the great favorite of the evening. He won in five categories and lived up to his role as a favorite. The big loser of the evening was Steven Spielberg's E.T. - The extraterrestrial who received only one award out of twelve nominations.
