Gerry Humphreys (sound engineer)
Gerry Humphreys (* 11. May 1931 in Llandrindod Wells , Wales , † 5. December 2006 in London ) was an English engineer who in 1983 for the epic film Gandhi and in 1986 for the film drama A Chorus Line each in the category "Best Sound" for was nominated for an Oscar . He has been nominated several times for the BAFTA Film Award , which he won twice. From his home country he was honored with the British Order of Merit .
Life
Gerry Humphreys has made a name for himself as a sound engineer in the UK in over 250 films. He has worked with such important directors as Roman Polański , Richard Attenborough , Richard Lester and John Schlesinger . Examples are: When Katelbach comes ... Humphreys, who was born in Wales, grew up in Esher , a suburb of London. He began his film career in 1947 at Walton Studio, but initially as a delivery boy before he was allowed to work for Lewis Milestone in 1953 . He was responsible for the mixer for the first time in 1965 in Roman Polanski's film Disgust . During his long career in film, he had to adapt to many changes in the sound field. In 1995 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to promoting the film industry in Great Britain .
1983 Humphreys got together with Robin O'Donoghue, Jonathan Bates and Simon Kaye an Oscar nomination in the category "Best Sound" for the film drama Gandhi by Richard Attenborough . The Oscar went to Robert Knudson , Robert J. Glass , Don Digirolamo and Gene S. Cantamessa and the drama ET - The Extra-Terrestrial .
1986 Humphreys was with Donald O. Mitchell , Michael Minkler and Christopher Newman was nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Sound Editing" for the film drama A Chorus Line by Richard Attenborough . The Oscar went to Chris Jenkins, Gary Alexander, Larry Stensvold and Peter Handford and the literary adaptation Out of Africa .
