action

The reserved Henry Bell is fired by his condescending boss Bruce Tick, while the affluent and eccentric Karen Knightly is dumped by her lover Anthony Staxton-Billing. This has decided to return to his wife Imogen. Henry and Karen want to end their lives by jumping off Tower Bridge in London . The plan fails and so they finally get to know each other. Karen and Henry make a pact; each of them should perform an act of revenge on behalf of the other. Henry, however, is not very enthusiastic about the plan.

Karen disguises herself as an ugly office worker, finds a job as an assistant to Bruce Tick and destroys his marriage in no time at all by convincing his wife Hilary that Bruce is having an extramarital affair. Henry, on the other hand, has a hard time keeping his end of the bargain because he falls in love with Imogen Staxton-Billing. Instead of orchestrating her downfall, he starts an affair with her. Henry also discovers that Anthony left Karen not because of Imogen, but because of a beautician named Daphne Teal. He concludes that Karen may be more of a villain than a victim. Indeed, she turns out to be a terrible opponent when she learns that Henry has broken the pact.

Production notes

The rural area was shot in Weston Turville in Buckinghamshire and the interior was shot in Twickenham Film Studios in Middlesex .

The film was briefly released in Italy under the title Love and Vendettas . However, due to its modest success, it was initially not sold any further. On December 30, 1999, it was first broadcast on television by the British broadcaster BBC Two . It was later released on DVD in the United States and Germany .

criticism

“The structure of the film is based on Hitchcock's classic Conspiracy in the Nordexpress , but which develops the material as a comedy. Swipes at British conventions, sometimes a bit coarse humor and the playful mood of the leading actors, who alludes to their image with relish, ensure solid entertainment. "
