Eye of the Tiger is a song by the band Survivor and written by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik for the film Rocky III - The Eye of the Tiger (1982). It was released as a single in May 1982.
background
The original plan was to use the Queen title Another One Bites the Dust in the film, but Queen denied Sylvester Stallone the rights. Stallone knew the title Poor Man's Son and the album Premonition by Survivor and commissioned them to write an adequate title for the beginning of the film. To do this, he transmitted the first three minutes of the film to the band, on which the Queen hit could be heard. He only gave the band the requirement that the song should have a "strong beat". The song title comes from a saying by Rocky's trainer Mickey, who said in the film: "Stay focused and keep the eye of the tiger." The drumbeat of the song is supposed to reflect the punch of the boxer (left - left, right, left). Although Stallone had the band write a third verse - in addition to a few other suggestions for improvement - due to the tight schedule, according to Jim Peterik, the demo version was used for the intro of the film.
There is also a track on Survivor's debut album called Young Blood , which has a similar intro .
