Tom Gaebel (born January 13, 1975 in Gelsenkirchen , actually Tom Gäbel ) is a German singer , entertainer and band leader .

Musical career

Tom Gaebel grew up in a musical family in Ibbenbüren . His musical talent was discovered and promoted early on. In addition to his twelve-year violin training, he learned to play the drums and trombone himself . During his school days he played theater, made short films, played in the big band of his school and was involved in two musicals. With the JugendJazzOrchester NRW he toured as a trombonist in China in 1998 and was on tour as a singer with the Bundesjugendjazzorchester in 2000/2001 . At the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in Hilversum he finally permanent after an eight year study of music, the main compartment jazz singing with a graduate degree ( cum laude completed). While still a student, he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Worldport Jazz Festival and the Gooise Jazz Festival; In 2004 he also sang Ellis Bring Back that Smile for the soundtrack of the Dutch film Ellis in Glamourland . He plays the recorder, violin, drums, trombone and piano.

His younger brother Colin Gäbel was a network reporter for the broadcaster GIGA Digital Television and works as a presenter and editor for the online broadcaster Rocket Beans TV . His youngest brother Denis Gäbel became a jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition).

Tom Gaebel became known to the general public through his project Tom Gaebel & Band play Frank Sinatra, which he started in 2004 . His next album Introducing: Myself contained not only cover versions but also his own compositions. His first television appearances further improved Gaebel's fame, for example at the TV-total-New Year's Eve Gala , TV-total-Jazz-Night or Red Nose Day . His brother Denis Gäbel , a successful saxophonist, also regularly takes part in his album recordings and concert tours .

In 2007 he changed the original spelling of his name Tom Gäbel to Tom Gaebel “for reasons of modernity” . His fans nicknamed him Dr. Swing .

In 2010, for the 18th anniversary, Gaebel had a guest appearance alongside Udo Walz on Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten . He has also appeared in TV shows such as Volle Kanne , The Ultimate Chartshow and DAS! to guest. Since 2010 Tom Gaebel has been a regular guest in the ZDF spring, autumn and Advent shows and in the ZDF TV garden as well as in various other productions such as Nur die Liebe sucht , MDR Hier ab 4 and the RTL chart show .

Gaebel played at many festivals, including the Düsseldorf Jazz Rally , the Kemptener Jazzfrühling, the Mittelrhein Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Rheingau Music Festival and the Stuttgart Jazzopen .

In 2013 he went on tour nationwide with the Christmas a GoGo program and in the same year received gold in the German Jazz Award for the album Easy Christmas because of the sales .

In 2014 the singer released his sixth studio album entitled So Good to Be Me , which consists mostly of his own compositions.

After Easy Christmas , Tom Gaebel released his second Christmas album A Swinging Christmas in 2015 . In commemoration of Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday in December 2015, Gaebel played a few live concerts with his orchestra. a. also with the WDR Funkhausorchester. In 2016, Tom Gaebel was seen as a mentor and coach in the TV show It takes Two on RTL. He emerged victorious there with the news anchor Annett Möller. In 2017 he was the first guest alongside Doro Pesch , Laith al Deen and Tim Bendzko in Xavier Naidoo's TV show Xavier's Request Concert on Sky One, in which Naidoo sang Tom Gaebel's title The Cat .

In 2018 there was a collaboration with the Fantastischen Vier , on the album Captain Fantastic there is a reprise version of the title Hitisn feat. Tom Gaebel.

The eighth studio album Perfect Day was again produced by Echo winner Vincent Sorg and contains duets with the Baseballs and Natalia Avelon . In December 2019 Tom Gaebel published the new Christmas song A Swinging Christmas together with a German and English version of the Christmas classic Winter Wonderland .

Awards

Gaebel received the German Jazz Award for the album Introducing Myself 2006 ; Due to the further sales, he received the platinum format of the award in 2017. In 2007 the German Jazz Award followed for the album Good Life and ten years later the German Jazz Award in platinum. He received a German Jazz Award in gold format for the albums Don't Wanna Dance (2009), Music to Watch Girls By (2011), Easy Christmas (2013), A Swinging Christmas (2018) and So Good To Be Me (2018) .
