The ZDF-Fernsehgarten is an entertainment program of the ZDF , which is broadcast live on Sunday mornings in the summer months from the ZDF broadcasting center in Mainz-Lerchenberg . Around 16 to 21 programs are produced annually. The show is moderated by Andrea Kiewel .

Story and moderators

The first ZDF television garden was broadcast on June 29, 1986, on the slot of the program ZDF Matinee , and hosted by Ilona Christen , who presented a total of 78 programs and gave the program its own stamp. Up until the 1992 season, Christian's “trademark” was a yellow raincoat next to her unusual glasses.

The show was hosted by Ramona Leiß from 1993 to 1999 . Andrea Kiewel has been the presenter since 2000.

On September 17, 2006, the show celebrated its 20th anniversary. In the 2007 season, the ZDF television garden organized in cooperation with the magazine Yam! for the first time a school band competition, which was an integral part of the program at that time.

On July 8, 2012, previously unknown people disturbed Roland Kaiser’s appearance with savage abuse of Germany. Two weeks later, people were arrested on the show who are said to have insulted other guests.

At the end of 2013, in response to popular requests from viewers, it was decided to expand the ZDF television garden for the whole year. For the new “TV Garden on Tour” editions (see below), the opening credits including the color scheme are varied accordingly. Each format has its own color coding: spring = turquoise, summer = apple green, autumn = orange and winter = blue.

Since May 2014, the program for the blind and visually impaired has been provided with a picture description .

On June 29, 2014, the ZDF television garden was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running live open-air entertainment show. A total of 49,507 minutes and 31 seconds have been broadcast live so far (as of 2014), which corresponds to 34 days at a time.

On July 28, 2019, the live broadcast had to be moved to a studio due to a storm front. The viewers were brought to the nearby ZDF - Meistermannhalle . Meanwhile, the artists and Andrea Kiewel continued the broadcast from an accident studio.

Andrea Kiewel, who had to hand over the moderation of the show in 2007 in the course of the surreptitious advertising allegations, has been the moderator of the ZDF television garden for the second time since 2009 . Your fee is 16,000 euros per shipment.

Co-moderation (selection)

From 1986 to 1989 the ZDF TV announcers were also there regularly, moderating the “Modebox” and pointing out highlights of the ZDF program with the help of prominent guests.

In 1996, Kai Böcking reported as an outside reporter, repeatedly for 16 episodes from a different location for an action. 1997 moderated alongside Ramona Leiss also Heike Maurer the Fernsehgarten . In addition to Andrea Kiewel, Gregor Steinbrenner also appeared frequently in the television garden between 2000 and 2004 . In 2000 and 2001 he moderated alongside Andrea Kiewel as co-moderator, in 2003 he was available as a reporter at the biathlon and in 2004 he moderated as a representative for Kiewel and as a reporter. During Kiewel's pregnancy in summer 2001, she was supported by several co-moderators, including Wolfgang Lippert , Cherno Jobatey and Thomas Ohrner as well as Gregor Steinbrenner. Even today, guest presenters regularly appear alongside Kiewel.

Allegations of surreptitious advertising

In May 2010 it became known that a "gardening expert" who appeared on the show and was not presented there is the manager of a gardening chain. During her appearance she explicitly advertised several products offered by her company without identifying herself as an employee. In the program, Kiewel referred to an online competition in which the company's shopping vouchers could be won. In the context of the program, the company carried out a marketing campaign, the appearance of which was strongly based on that of the ZDF television garden and, with the broadcaster's contractual agreement, used the station logo. In the credits the support was shown as "production aid". According to the 13th State Treaty on Broadcasting , which came into force in April 2010 , product placements on German television are only permitted for private broadcasters . On June 21, 2010 the program committee of the television council dealt with the question of whether the presentation of the garden retail chain met the criteria for surreptitious advertising. The ZDF rejected the corresponding criticism and referred to its cost savings by equipping it with "plants and garden accessories and equipment both for the garden sequences of individual programs and for decorating the stage and the grounds of the television garden". According to information from sueddeutsche.de , the value of the so-called product aids should amount to 250,000 euros. The legal admissibility of the cooperation was repeatedly questioned in the media.

Highlights & special editions

In 2019 there were two editions of the ZDF-Fernsehgarten that received special media attention. Due to a storm, the ZDF had to improvise on the "Mallorca Party" edition on July 28, 2019 and move the live broadcast from the usual area to an "emergency" studio. The presenter and the stars present fled to the studio together during the live broadcast and continued the program undeterred.

The edition on August 18, 2019 caused a special media spectacle. The comedian Luke Mockridge completed a noticeably bizarre appearance and insulted the audience, among other things. The appearance was canceled during the live broadcast by presenter Andrea Kiewel.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic , the first programs in the 2020 season will be broadcast without a live audience for the first time. The number of artists and guests will also be halved.

The contents of the program are music and shows, with both well-known and, in Germany, less well-known, predominantly German artists performing. In addition, topics such as fashion , cooking , DIY , health tips , gardening or sport (especially trend sports ) are interspersed. The TV chef Armin Roßmeier has been presenting various dishes since the first season . Artistic and variety acts complete the program. Due to the size of the production area, the broadcast offers the advantage of being able to carry out actions for which there would be no space in a normal studio .

ZDF winter garden

From 1994 to 2000, winter editions of the ZDF television garden were broadcast at noon on the four Sundays in Advent , moderated by Ramona Leiß, Wolfgang Lippert, Heike Maurer, Michael Schanze and Norbert Schramm . In addition to the usual program content, tips on Christmas decorations were given and Christmas customs from various German regions were presented. Cooking tips from Johann Lafer and the computer corner with Christian Spanik were also an integral part .

tivi children's television garden

In 1998 and 1999 a children's television garden was broadcast, which was shown in the children's and youth program ZDFtivi . It mainly featured artists who were popular with children. In addition, visitors were able to meet characters from the children's program such as Tabaluga , Maya the bee or Rudi the raven, known from the Siebenstein series . These characters continued to be part of the audience in the regular shows until the end of the 2012 season. The tivi children's television garden was initially moderated by Gregor Steinbrenner, Antje Pieper and Marco Ströhlein . In the following year, in addition to Steinbrenner, Juri Tetzlaff also gave the show.

ZDF television garden on tour

Due to the huge popularity of the format, the ZDF TV garden went on tour at the beginning of 2014, replacing the spring , autumn and Advent shows that had been broadcast previously . The show is presented by Andrea Kiewel, the concept being identical to the summer editions.

Three winter editions were produced by the Gnadenalm in Obertauern . In addition, a special edition from Kitzbühel was broadcast in which Kiewel had Hansi Hinterseer show him his homeland and excerpts from previous shows were shown. This was followed by four spring issues from the Hotel R2 Rio Calma in Fuerteventura . In autumn, two issues each from the Schloßberg in Graz and from the thermal baths in Merano were broadcast. The season ended with two winter editions of the Wilder Kaiser in Ellmau .

In 2015 the journey started in winter with two episodes from the Madritschhütte in Sulden and one from the Mooserwirt in St. Anton am Arlberg . In the spring, two special editions were shown on the subjects of "70s, 80s, 90s" and "Schlager" from the home port in Wiesbaden . Then three episodes were produced on Bahia del Duque beach in Tenerife . In autumn there were three shows from the lake promenade in Ascona . Finally, two winter editions were broadcast from the Hotel Ritsch on the Alpe di Siusi .

After a break, the ZDF TV Garden on Tour started in spring 2016 with three episodes from the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort in Meloneras on Gran Canaria . Three episodes from Mohrenplatz in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were also produced in winter .

In 2017, the Hotel R2 Rio Calma in Costa Calma on Fuerteventura was again the scene of three spring editions.

The three spring episodes of 2018 came again from sunny Playa del Duque on Tenerife. The three autumn episodes came from the port island in Stralsund .

In spring 2019 there were three editions from the Amadores Beach Club in Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria. In autumn there were three episodes from Neuharlingersiel harbor .

In March 2020, the three issues from Fuerteventura that were broadcast from April 19 should have been recorded, but this did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Therefore, from April 19th to May 3rd, three repeats from the last three years were broadcast.

Up to 6000 visitors follow the show in Mainz live on site. The range on television is up to two million viewers and has a market share of up to 22 percent. The ZDF television garden is thus one of the most popular television programs on the ZDF. During Kiewel's one-year break from the TV garden , the annual average number of viewers fell to 1.5 million, the market share from 19.7 to 15.8 percent, and after their return the values rose again significantly.

Reviews

“[...] For seven years, Kiewel hosted the 'TV Garden ', a bizarre mix of the Federal Garden Show and all sorts of music. Always a little breathless, always a touch too happy to appear authentic. Because: when she laughs, her eyes don't laugh too. But for her regular audience she is the always cheerful girl from the east. Because the former competitive swimmer in the national team of the GDR also goes - without batting an eyelid - where it hurts. After the show she jumps into the water with clothes on. For that, they especially love their male fans. [...] "

- Frankfurter Rundschau zu Kiewel in the ZDF television garden

"[...] Yes, I know, nobody takes the television garden seriously, it is stamped as an officially certified ship of fools, which is let off the leash again and again on Sundays in the silent hope that it might get lost in the vastness of the ocean. But the ship of lost souls keeps returning. That would not be dramatic if there were not considerable portions of the fee money taken from each viewer into this scenario. [...] "
