history

Neuharlingersiel was first mentioned in documents in 1693. The land was won by building a dike in Harle Bay . Neuharlingersiel replaced Altharlingersiel as Sielort . Since then Neuharlingersiel has also been a port for deep-sea fishing.

In the first decades of the 18th century, a landing stage developed into a protective and transshipment port. It was foreign freighters who recognized the advantageous location of the new port and called from there to the various commercial ports on the North and Baltic Sea coasts. In order to prevent the harbor bank from breaking off, wooden planks were driven in around the harbor basin. During the period mentioned, eight berths were created for seagoing ships, which currently mostly belonged to the sailing ship type of kuffen . After the last male descendant of the East Frisian noble family of the Cirksena died in 1744 , the Kingdom of Prussia took over control of East Frisia and gave the port towns better access to international trade. Neuharlingersiel became an export and import port. East Frisian grain was mainly exported to the Scandinavian countries. On the way back, the freight ships from Neuharlingersiel transported wood from Finland and Sweden to their homeland. Warehouses and trading houses as well as processing companies such as sawmills were built in Sielort. The economic boom lasted until the last years of the 18th century.

In 1795, England blocked the Dutch ports as a result of its conflict with Napoleon , which also had a negative impact in Neuharlingersiel. After the lost battle of Jena and Auerstedt , Prussia ceded East Friesland to the Kingdom of Holland , newly founded by Napoleon, at the end of 1806 . As a result, Neuharlingersiel became a Dutch garrison town for a few years. A lieutenant , a drum and 18 soldiers took up quarters in the port until 1810. After that - East Frisia had come under the direct rule of the French Empire - the soldiers were replaced by customs officers. Their main task was to monitor the trade restrictions imposed by Napoleon on the so-called continental barrier. In Neuharlingersiel attempts were made to replace the lack of income from freight traffic and trade with goods smuggling. In this context, the port area was connected by an underground corridor with a restaurant, the basement of which was used as a warehouse for the smuggled goods. Remains of this tunnel came to light in 1959 during expansion work for the new pumping station.

In 1813 the French occupying forces had to withdraw. East Frisia was again under Prussian rule for a short time, but was initially unable to continue the pre-Apoleonic heyday in terms of trade and traffic. Even after East Frisia was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814/15, there was initially no economic upturn. It was not until 1830 that a new period of prosperity began, which lasted until the end of the 19th century.

During National Socialism, Georg von Eucken-Addenhausen resided as President of the East Frisian Landscape on the Sielhof near Neuharlingersiel. According to the latest research, he is considered the "pioneer of National Socialism" in Neuharlingersiel.

Until 1963 the coastal town was one of the smallest communities in Germany. Its base was only four hectares. Only the houses, the properties of which directly touched the Neuharlingersieler harbor basin, belonged to the small Sielort, which was completely enclosed by the neighboring community of Seriem . In 1962, the two communities agreed to draw a new border, which was carried out in 1963. Neuharlingersiel received around 36 hectares of settlement land from Seriem.

In 1968 the communities Neuharlingersiel and Seriem merged. Four years later, the municipalities of Neuharlingersiel, Altharlingersiel and Ostbense were merged into today's municipality of Neuharlingersiel as part of the regional reform of July 1, 1972. Neuharlingersiel forms since then with the communities Dunum , Holtgast , Moorweg , Stedesdorf , Werdum and the city Esens the Samtgemeinde Esens . The administration of the joint municipality has its seat in Esens.

Buildings

The Sielhof in April 2010
Memorial for the establishment of the Kyffhäuser monument, in the form of a reliquary. Around 1900.

The Sielhof is a former manor house from the 18th century and has been restored true to the original and modernized. In the place of the current building there used to be a building called Die Warfe , which belonged to the Princely House. As an inscription plate on the east gable reveals, the Sielhof was built in 1755 by Siebelt Frerichs Eymen. It was originally a two-story brick building with a hipped roof , the facades of which were structured by pilasters . In 1825 the property became the property of the Eucken family. Georg von Eucken-Addenhausen , who had been raised to the nobility in 1906, had the Sielhof extensively renovated between 1899 and 1906. During this time the neo-baroque tower on the entrance side and the two side wings, of which the right one contains a chapel, were built. Inside the manor house remains of the baroque furnishings have been preserved. The ground floor, which has been used as a restaurant since 1967, contains a fireplace with Delft tiles dated 1756 and a richly carved door from the same period. A hall with a painted wooden ceiling was preserved on the upper floor . Even today, the Sielhof is partially surrounded by a moat . This is spanned by a bridge leading into the adjacent park , the railing of which is made of whale bones.

Around 1900 Georg von Eucken had a memorial erected in the wall of the Sielhof for the construction of the Kyffhäuser monument in the form of a reliquary. There is no on-site identification of the clear nationalist and Nazi background.

Since 1989 the Sielhof has been owned by the Kurvereins Neuharlingersiel. The building is now known as the “House of the Guest”. Today there is a restaurant with a café, a library and a maritime chapel where weddings take place. In addition, church services, readings and lectures as well as creative offers are organized. The Bible tile wall that has been preserved to this day is particularly worth seeing . With around 820 Bible tiles, it is the largest closed unit of Bible tiles in East Frisia.

The brick building of the Dattein restaurant, erected around 300 years ago, is likely to be the oldest surviving residential building in Neuharlingersiel. It was extensively renovated in 2000 and converted into a restaurant.

The German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) has been present in Neuharlingersiel since 1869 and provides rescue services in the Wadden Sea as far as the islands of Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. In 1930 a motor lifeboat came to the station for the first time , the 10-meter-long pilot commander Lahrmann . It was followed by three 10-meter boats named Ulrich Steffens by 1949 , of which Ulrich Steffens III remained in service until 1972. As a successor the DGzRS stationed the Siegfried Boysen , one of two boats of the so-called 12-meter class. After almost 30 years of service, the replacement came in 2000 with the Neuharlingersiel , a 9.5 meter long boat of the current DGzRS class with a closed wheelhouse.

The rescue shed next to the slipway at Hafen West dates from 1963. It houses a small exhibition on sea rescue with the Ulrich Steffens III . DGzRS volunteers regularly open the doors and provide an insight into the eventful and moving history of the sea rescuers. Maritime rescue equipment, wreckage, ship models and historical documents from seafaring can be viewed. The voluntary helpers manned the lifeboat in the event of an emergency for their rescue missions in the area in front of Neuharlingersiel with the ferry and excursion traffic to the islands as well as the pleasure boat trip.

Economy and Infrastructure

Neuharlingersiel harbor from the air

The most important branch of the economy is tourism. In the second half of the 19th century, tourism in the mainland ports - including Neuharlingersiel - increased, partly due to the increased number of bathing activities on the islands. The first documented mention of Neuharlingersiel as a bathing resort comes from the year 1861. Official advertising brochures have existed since 1912. The Neuharlingersiel bathing and tourist association, now the Neuharlingersiel health resort, was founded in 1960. In the period that followed, the town was expanded.

Important stations for tourism were the construction of the Kurhaus (today's BadeWerk), the campsite and the 20-hectare sandy beach with beach chairs and beach promenade. Around 100,000 bathing holidaymakers and tourists with around 800,000 overnight stays are counted every year. The campsite, which is located directly behind the dike, offers around 1100 parking spaces for caravans and motorhomes as well as around 300 tent spaces all year round.

The port is currently home to eight active fishing trawlers.
