Holtgast is a municipality in the Esens municipality in the Wittmund district in Lower Saxony . The community had around 1750 inhabitants in 2016 and covers an area of ​​24 square kilometers. The name Holtgast stands for forest ( holt ) on the Geest ( gast ).

The community is located in the holiday region on the East Frisian North Sea coast. Holtgast is on the road between Esens and Dornum . The Schafhauser Forest and the town of Esens are located near the holiday resort of Holtgast. Holtgast owned a stop on the Ostfriesische Uferbahn railway line , the Holtgast stop and the Dornum - Holtgast - Esens section were closed in 1985 and dismantled in 1986, but there are citizens' initiatives that are campaigning for the resumption of local rail transport on the entire coastal railway.

Blazon : In the shield split by gold and blue, an abbot's staff and two ears of corn crossed over a millstone in mixed colors; the millstone is underlaid by a lowered silver wavy bar. Nature reserve

The ox pasture covers 67 hectares and has been a nature reserve since 1960. The area, which is partly in the municipality of Moorweg, has been part of the Ochsenweide, Schafhauser Wald and Feuchtwiesen bei Esens nature reserve since 2019 .

Holtgast lives mainly from tourism. The number of holiday apartments is high. The tourist tax-free Holtgast is also popular because of its proximity to Esens .
