Damsum is a part of the municipality of Holtgast in the East Frisian municipality of Esens .

The place is at a height of 2 meters above sea level, about six kilometers west-northwest of Esens and about four kilometers east-southeast of Dornumersiel . In addition to Damsum, the district also includes the residential areas Grundich and Siepkwerdum, which together cover an area of 3.51 square kilometers. The place was first mentioned in documents as Damzum in 1434 . The current spelling has been in use since 1585. The place name is interpreted either as a combination of the nickname Dammo or the old Frisian word for dam or dike with home.

Worth seeing is one of the smallest private cemeteries in East Friesland, which was laid out in 1474 on a small Wurt in Siepkwerdum, as well as several windloopers , i.e. trees bent by frequent northwest winds in Grundich.
