Utgast is a district of the municipality of Holtgast in the Wittmund district in Lower Saxony .

The scattered settlement is located on a Geest promontory around four kilometers west of Esens . Utgast also includes the Küsterei , Mimstede , Mosishütte , Pansath and Plaggenkroog residential areas , which together cover an area of ​​760  hectares . A total of around 350 people live in Utgast.

history

Utgast has probably been settled since the Iron Age. During the Middle Ages, the Pansath Monastery existed in the present-day area , which since 1421 has formed a suburb of the neighboring Marienkamp Monastery .

Utgast was first mentioned as Jotgeet around 1450 . Later names are Uthgarst (1570), Uthgast (1581–1586) and Uthgarste (1670). The name is of old Frisian origin and means outside (distant) guests .
