The next larger towns in the immediate vicinity are Esens, twelve kilometers to the east, and Westerholt, seven kilometers to the south . The place was founded as a warf village on Gley-Podsol-Boden at a height of six meters above sea level . Kalkmarsch surrounds the town center in the north, east and west . In the south there is an area with Kleimarsch .

history

The Sielort is one of the oldest ports on the East Frisian coast. The settlement of the place probably began in the 15th century. After a sluice site located on the coast, later known as Altensiel, was destroyed in the St. Peters flood on February 22nd, 1651 , the Dornumer and Westeraccumer sluices were built next to each other in 1653. The border between East Frisia and Harlingerland once separated here. The two places Dornumersiel and Westeraccumersiel could only arise after the polders were dyed . The village was first mentioned in a document in 1684. In 1717 they were almost completely destroyed by the Christmas flood . Today Dornumersiel is a seaside resort .

On July 1, 1972, the communities Dornumergrode, Westeraccumersiel and Westerbur were incorporated.

From August 2, 1972 to October 31, 2001 the place was part of the joint municipality of Dornum.

On November 1, 2001, Dornumersiel came to the municipality of Dornum.

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a campsite on the beach and a heated seawater outdoor pool. In the North Sea House you can find out interesting facts about the mudflats and the region, as well as building dikes. Dornumersiel has been a North Sea resort since 1990 with a 70,000 m² sandy beach. In the thatched house by the sea with play barn there is a reading room, library, fireplace room, table tennis, craft and work rooms as well as seminar and lecture rooms. On the Störtebekerstraße and the small streets, some directly behind the dike, you can explore several small towns with their unmistakable features. Cutter and sport boat harbor also characterize the recreation area.

Westeraccumersiel has the most important flatfish catch of all East Frisian ports.
