Westdorf is a district of the municipality of Dornum in East Frisia . In 2011 the district, which also includes Ostdorf , had 197 inhabitants.
Westdorf is about three kilometers south of the North Sea coast. The main town of the municipality, Dornum, is about six kilometers away in an easterly direction. The first traces of settlement in the area of today's district date from the Roman Empire. The Warfendorf was founded in the middle of the Kalkmarsch on the former Hilgenried Bay. Agriculture plays an important role economically. Horse breeding and keeping have a special place here. In this area the farmers from Westdorf were able to show success as district, provincial and state winners. For this reason, the horseshoe appears in the coat of arms.
On July 1, 1972, Westdorf was incorporated into the municipality of Nesse. On November 1, 2001 this came to the Dornum community.
The coat of arms of the place shows a green mountain in silver over a silver shield base, raised by a black horseshoe. It symbolizes the history of the place: The green mountain indicates the warfen in the area of the municipality. The horseshoe illustrates the importance of agriculture.
The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Ruth Schmidt Stockhausen (1922–2014) lived very close to the warf from 1983 to 2014 in an old Gulfhof on Westdorfer Cankebeerstrasse. Her artistic estate is managed by the Westdorf-based Ruth Schmidt Stockhausen Foundation and her studio rooms can be viewed every summer on selected weekends.
