Location of Dornumergrode in Lower Saxony

Dornumergrode is a district of the municipality of Dornum in East Friesland . In 2008 the district had 299 inhabitants.

Dornumergrode is about one kilometer south of the North Sea coast. The main town of the municipality, Dornum, is about three kilometers to the south. The place was founded on a long throw , which is surrounded by Kalkmarsch . Dornumergrode is on Störtebekerstrasse, the "green coastal road". Today the small village is a collection of farms and holiday homes.

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1443 as in Astragroda . The current spelling has been used since 1528/30. The area of today's local area was finally diked in 1570. Before that, however, there must have been attempted dikes, as indicated by old dike lines.

On July 1, 1972, Dornumergrode was incorporated into the municipality of Dornumersiel. On November 1, 2001 this came to the Dornum community.

The town's coat of arms shows a black, red-armored bear with a gold collar growing in the golden field of blue waves sprinkled with black clover leaves. It symbolizes the history of the place: For the fertile pasture and arable land reclaimed from the water, the coat of arms shows the waves in the base of the shield and the cloverleaves scattered over the surface of the shield. The growing bear, the heraldic animal of Attena , who were chiefs of Dornum, stands for the first part of the place name.
