About this picture

Utarp is one of eight member communities of the integrated community Holtriem in the Wittmund district in Lower Saxony . The municipality had about 650 inhabitants in 2004 and covers an area of 6.37 square kilometers. In addition to the village of Utarp, it also includes the districts of Narp and Schlei.

The region as well as the community live mainly from tourism. The distance to the North Sea is only 14 kilometers. Agriculture is only possible to a limited extent because the soil is of poor quality.

history

Utarp was first mentioned in a document in 1473 as “tho Uthorpe”, but the municipality was already settled in the Neolithic Age. A large stone grave of the funnel beaker culture, which has since been destroyed, is evidence of this . During an excavation at its location in 1878, several vessels were recovered.

The old mansion mill in the form of a post mill , which was first mentioned in 1684, was demolished in 1908 and replaced by a Dutch windmill. Only the trunk of this Dutch windmill is still standing, as the upper part was brought to Bad Zwischenahn in 1960 .
