Ochtersum is a municipality in the integrated community of Holtriem in the East Frisian district of Wittmund , Lower Saxony . The municipality had about 950 inhabitants in 2004 and covers a total area of 10.82 square kilometers.

Ochtersum is ten kilometers west of Esens on state road 6 between Holtgast and Utarp .

The districts are Barkholt , Ostochtersum and Westochtersum .
history
The first documentary mention dates back to the year 1411. The St. Materniani Church Westochtersum was built between 1260 and 1270. Before the dike in northern areas, the North Sea could reach the church when the tide was high .
Only the hull of the former Turmholländer windmill remains today. It was built in 1911 instead of a post mill.
Today's community Ochtersum was created on July 1, 1972 from the merger of the two communities Ostochtersum and Westochtersum .
