Barkholt

Barkholt is adjacent to East and Westochtersum one of three districts of Ochtersum , a town on the Holtriem in the East Frisian district Wittmund , Lower Saxony .

The village is about 6.3 kilometers northeast of Westerholt . The earliest known documentary mention of Barkholt dates back to 1589. At that time the place name was recorded as Barckholt . Other spellings of the place name were Bargholtz (1670) and Borchholt (1730). The current name has been used since 1787. The name is a combination of the words bark (= birch) and holt (= forest). The place name thus denotes a birch forest . In 1823 Barkholt had 109 residents, who were spread over 19 fireplaces. In 1848 there were 139 residents in 21 residential buildings.
