Location of Ostbense in Lower Saxony

Wadden Sea off Ostbense

Ostbense is a district of the East Frisian community Neuharlingersiel ( Samtgemeinde Esens ) on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony .

In the Middle Ages the place was about 400 meters further north in the area of today's Wadden Sea and was destroyed at the end of the Middle Ages by the rising sea level . Archaeological finds in the mudflats show that the landscape in this area was inhabited as early as the 3rd century BC. In the vicinity of the former place the remains of a burial ground with body graves from the migration period have been observed. Ceramics, animal bones, iron slag, wood, wells, traces of salt extraction from peat and traces of ditch systems were found at the settlement site. The finds are exhibited in the “Leben am Meer” museum in Esens . The dike line must have been further out here in the past and was withdrawn to the present dyke line. There is a memorial stone on the dike , which reminds of the places that were lost here.
