Kuff describes a historical type of ship that is mostly used in coastal shipping. The kuff was in use along the North Sea coasts of Belgium , the Netherlands and Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries . Typically a kuff had one and a half masts , with a gaff sail on the main mast and one or two square sails on its Mars stalk. The mizzen mast was also rigged with a gaff sail. The ship had a full shape with a flat bottom and strongly rounded and raised bow and stern shapes . Smaller skids were equipped with side swords .
