history

The Bible reading association called Children's Special Service Mission (CSSM) was founded in 1867 by office worker Josiah Spiers in London when he had to rent classrooms for meetings of 50 children in order to tell them about the Bible according to their age. Keswick Sunday school teacher Annie Marston made the first Bible reading cards for children in 1879. By 1889 there were already Bible reading plans in 28 languages in the British Empire , Belgium , Spain and Russia . In 1925, Mrs. Dunn-Pattison from England and Alice van Berchem from Switzerland founded La Ligue pour la lecture de la Bible . In 1930 Ernst Aebi was appointed Secretary General of the Biblical Association in German-speaking Switzerland . In 1933 he published his own Bible reading magazine for the first time with the Bible Reading Association. The Biblical Association has existed in Germany since 1947, when the Swiss branch sent 14,000 magazines to the war-torn country.

In 1960, at the first international conference in Old Jordans under the then British General Secretary John Laird, the rigid structures were adapted and a cooperative model developed so that each country could act independently and adapt its activities to its own needs. In 1985 Scripture Union was already widespread in 70 states. At the international meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, common goals, beliefs and working principles were set so that the unity of the organization could be strengthened. In 2000 the Bible Reading Association was active in over 120 countries, and in 2017 in over 130 countries. As a result of globalization and digitization , electronic Bible reading aids are being developed and cross-state cooperation is being strengthened.

The Biblical Alliance e. V. works on the spiritual basis of the Evangelical Alliance and the guidelines agreed within the framework of the International Council of the Biblical Federation. In 2017 he moved his headquarters from Gummersbach to Marienheide. The chairman of the board is Andreas Utsch, and the general secretary since October 2015 is Andreas Klotz.

Working method

The Bible Reading Association works worldwide primarily among schoolchildren, students and families. He sees his task in helping people to find a way into the Bible and thus to discover the meaning of the Christian message for them. He implements this assignment in two ways: On the one hand, he creates experience-oriented offers in cooperation with church congregations, initiatives and local organizers, for example at children's Bible days or by holding religious lessons in schools with a Bible bus (Bible Shuttle). On the other hand, he develops publications that enable and encourage independent use of the Bible. It sells various Bible reading magazines, Bible editions, as well as books, magazines, CD-ROMs, and work materials that are designed to make Bible reading easier. Recently, the Swiss and German Bibles Association developed a Bible reading app under the name b next. It is international in nature and is available in German, French and English, and other European and Asian languages are planned.

The Bible Reading Association finances its work through donations. There are no grants from the state or any church. He sees himself as a non-denominational service company for churches, free churches and communities.

The Biblical Association was the office for the Year of Silence 2010 initiative .
