Cherno Jobatey (born August 6, 1965 in Berlin ) is a German journalist and television presenter .

Life and work

The son of a ship's cook from Gambia and a Berliner grew up in a family of five without a father. He studied political science at the Otto Suhr Institute in Berlin and with a DAAD scholarship in his fourth semester, he studied music in Los Angeles for a year ( Musicians' Institute Hollywood ).

After his stay in the USA , Jobatey worked as a freelancer for the broadcaster RIAS . He later wrote concert reviews for Die Zeit and Spiegel . In the 1990s he became the presenter of various ARD programs through the broadcaster Free Berlin , including 1998 to 2002 Do you understand fun? From 1992 to 2012 he was part of the team of moderators for the ZDF morning magazine . In 1997, Jobatey received an Arthur F. Burns Fellowship for a four-month internship at Paramount Studios (Hollywood). From 1999 to 2002 he presented the personality show Cherno - The RBB Talkshow on rbb television . In January 2013, after 20 years, he was replaced by Mitri Sirin as the presenter of the ZDF morning magazine; As a social reporter he continues to work for the show, since 2018 also for the ZDF midday magazine . From 2010 to 2012 he moderated the interactive political program log in on ZDFinfo .

In 2009 Jobatey had a guest appearance in the movie Horst Schlämmer - Isch kandidiere! . Since October 1, 2010, Jobatey has been the sponsor of the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium in Berlin-Friedrichshain for the project “ Schools without Racism ”.

Jobatey was editor (Editorial Director) of the German edition of the Huffington Post, which had been published since October 10, 2013, until it was discontinued on March 31, 2019.

In 2013 Jobatey accepted a teaching position in business communication at the University of Applied Sciences in Mittweida .

Jobatey's “trademark” used to be that he mostly wore basketball shoes with a suit.

In November 2013 he was one of the moderators of the 3rd Israeli Congress alongside Melody Sucharewicz .

In August 2018 he was the moderator of the award ceremony of the European Athletics Championships 2018 in Berlin for a short time , but was released early.

Jobatey has been Editor-at-Large at Focus Online since September 2019 .

Appearance at Zimmer frei! and dyslexia

Jobatey fought his dyslexia as a child and overcame it within a few years. After he had named this as his greatest achievement in the FAZ-Magazin questionnaire on September 11, 1998, dyslexia was recorded in the recording of the television program Zimmer frei! Right at the start, the moderators addressed this topic several times in a very ironic way. Jobatey then left the studio and only returned after nine minutes. At the request of the ARD chairman Peter Voss , who is also the director of Jobatey's program Do you understand fun? SWR was responsible , the recording was initially not broadcast by WDR television . It only aired on November 23, 2003. The original representation of the WDR that Jobatey himself had previously objected to a broadcast, was later released by the editorial team of Zimmer! denied.
