The Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium is a grammar school with a mathematical and scientific character on Rigaer Straße in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district .

Architecture of the current building

The school building is a plastered three-winged structure, which is connected to two outbuildings by covered walls and courtyard entrances. The rector's residence was in the left side building, and a gymnasium and a former reading room in the right. The Rector's House currently houses smaller classrooms, the editorial office of the school newspaper and the school's archive. The middle wing of the main building is set back slightly from the street front and contains the portal area embedded in double columns with a gable roof , above which two bears are depicted in an ornament by Otto Lessing , carrying a cartouche with a coat of arms. There is also a small roof tower on the central building. In 1985 extensive alterations and extensions as well as a renewal of the building front took place. The building is now a listed building .

history

school-building

The current building of the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium was designed in 1899 in Ludwig Hoffmann's design team by Georg Matzdorff and realized in 1901/1902. It housed the 247th and 252nd community dual school. During the GDR era, the " Herbert Baum " POS was located in this building . After the political change in 1993, the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium moved into the building.

Heinrich Hertz School

In 1961, the then-in was Adlershof located Extended Secondary School (EOS) the name of the physicist Heinrich Hertz awarded. The profiling in the direction of mathematics only emerged gradually through the initiative of individual teachers. In 1963 the first mathematically oriented 9th grade was established. From 1965 the Heinrich-Hertz-Oberschule became a school with a mathematical focus, in 1969 all classes of the school were mathematically oriented special classes. The school became known throughout Berlin and beyond among students interested in mathematics and science.

In 1969 the school moved to a new school building at Frankfurter Tor in Friedrichshain , in the square of Frankfurter Allee , Warschauer Strasse , Boxhagener Strasse and Niederbarnimstrasse . The building is covered by the block development on these streets and can therefore hardly be seen from the street. The school building consisted of a four-story, simple wing, parallel to Frankfurter Allee, with the main entrance south of the school yard. In the basement there were supply rooms and school meals. The building has been type school building (transition type "Berlin SK") of prefabricated panel components constructed of reinforced concrete. To the west of the school building is the old building of the former EOS "Georg Friedrich Händel" , a special school for music.

Over the years, there has been an increasing emphasis on mathematics and computer science, for example through special curricula to promote logical thinking and mathematics lectures for high school students. In 1985, EOS "Heinrich Hertz" became a special school in mathematics, science and technology with its own curriculum and Abitur tasks.

With the political changes in 1990, all special schools in the GDR had to reorient themselves, and in 1991 the application for the establishment of a high school with a mathematical and scientific profile was approved. Since then, the school has existed in its current form as a school with a special pedagogical character . The school-internal Heinrich Hertz competition was transferred to many other competitions such as “ Jugend forscht ”, the federal mathematics competition and the chemistry Olympics . In 1993 the school moved from Frankfurter Allee to its current building on Rigaer Straße. Today the former Hertzschule building at Frankfurter Tor is used by the Frankfurter Allee district central library .

Many of the school's students achieved top places in the national rounds of various competitions, and managed to achieve several medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad and other international competitions. In addition, the grammar school received an annual award from the Federal Minister for Education and Research for participating in the “Jugend forscht” competition.

Since 2010 the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium has been a member of the network " School without Racism - School with Courage ". The godfather of the project is Cherno Jobatey .

From the 2012/2013 school year an additional 5th grade was set up, but a new 7th grade was dropped. The school thus adapted to the current number of applicants.

Since 2013, the graduates have achieved average Abitur grades, which are always among the top 5 of Berlin's high schools. The Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium was last in 2019 the best state school in Berlin with an average grade of 1.76.

profile

The school aims to provide a solid education in all subjects and to equip students with special knowledge and skills in mathematics and the natural sciences . The basis for this is provided by a lesson table that has changed compared to general high schools . For example, in grades 7 to 10, math is taught for five hours. There are elective courses in grades 9 to 10 with the subjects computer science, Latin and history / geography, each lasting two hours. In addition, instead of the usual two, only one and a half hours of art or music and only two instead of three hours of sport are given, which means that the first two subjects are taught epoch-making from grade 8.

In the Abitur phase, in addition to an extensive range of advanced mathematics courses, a special advanced mathematics course is set up for students who are particularly gifted in mathematics, which already covers study-relevant material and, in the case of very good performance, includes receipt of university-valid certificates of achievement. Extension courses in mathematics and physics, which can be selected by all students, with topics such as an introduction to the theory of ordinary differential equations , metric spaces, astronomy and special relativity, complete the profile offered at the upper level. In addition, students are required to choose mathematics, chemistry or physics as one of the two advanced courses. In addition, another examination subject must also be natural science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology , computer science ).

In particular, the numerous working groups offered in the profile area for all years are well attended by the students and contribute significantly to the success of the students in the mathematical and scientific competitions through targeted preparation.

Selection process

The Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium accepts students interested in mathematics and science in the 5th and 7th grade from elementary schools and other high schools from all Berlin districts as well as from Brandenburg according to a performance-based selection mode. The final grades for the subjects English , German , natural sciences and mathematics are included, the latter is weighted twice based on the school profile.

Until a few years ago, the rush was so high that the places had to be drawn. However, the number of applicants has steadily declined, so that in future two classes should have been taught per year instead of the previous three. The decline was not least due to the establishment of 5th grades at other grammar schools. As a logical consequence and after the school's efforts, a 5th grade was established from the 2005/2006 school year, followed by a second 5th grade in 2012/2013.

If the pupils want to go to grammar school after the 4th grade, the parents must first submit an informal written application for admission. In order to assess the children's ability, the certificates from the first half of the school year in grade 4 are required. A score is calculated from the grades in the subjects German, mathematics and specialist knowledge. The following formula is used for this:

Grade of expertise + (2 × grade German) + (3 × grade mathematics).

If the result is less than or equal to 15 and the child was rated at least “good” in mathematics, the child can take an aptitude test. The students are ultimately chosen based on the following criteria:

  • 50% from the results of the aptitude test,
  • 25% from the school's educational recommendation and other criteria and
  • 25% from the calculated point total (see above).
