Chaim Noll (* 13. July 1954 as Hans Noll in Berlin ) is a German - Israeli journalist and writer . He writes essays , poems , short stories and novels .

Life

Noll grew up as the son of the GDR-based writer Dieter Noll in the GDR's nomenklatura . He studied art and art history in East Berlin before he evaded being drafted into the NVA in November 1980 by being admitted to a mental hospital and then retired. On May 8, 1984 he moved to West Berlin and worked there as a journalist.

From 1992 to 1995 he lived in Rome and then went to Israel with his wife, the painter Sabine Kahane (Binah Kahana) . First they lived in Midreshet Sde Boker in the Negev desert , then in Be'er Scheva and in Meitar . In 1998 he received Israeli citizenship . In addition to his literary work, Noll teaches at the University of Be'er Scheva and regularly travels to Germany for lectures and readings.

Since moving to West Berlin, Noll has worked as an author for a variety of German media.

reception

In April 2019, a planned reading by Noll in Leipzig was canceled at short notice by the organizing SPD- affiliated Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung . After the author initially received no justification, the head of the responsible country office, Matthias Eisel, spoke to the press and justified the rejection with Noll's “criticism of Germany's pro-Islamic regime policies”. He is also bothered by Noll's work on the blog The Axis of the Good , which he rated as “at least right-wing populist”. The director of the Jerusalem location of the Simon Wiesenthal Center , Efraim Zuroff , spoke of a sad day for German democracy, as the SPD “blacklists someone who does not agree with their foreign policy”. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation then regretted the media debate in a statement and underlined its solidarity-based attitude towards Israel.
