Yuri Tschinkel ( Russian Юрий Чинкель / Juri Tschinkel ; born May 31, 1964 in Moscow ) is a German-Russian mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry, automorphic forms and number theory.

Life

Yuri Tschinkel attended the Heinrich Hertz Advanced High School in East Berlin from 1979 and passed the Abitur there in 1983. He received his diploma with honors from Lomonosov University in 1990 and his PhD in 1992 with Yuri Manin at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( Rational points on algebraic surfaces ). Afterwards Tschinkel was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University . In 1995 he became Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and from 1999 to 2003 he was Associate Professor there. From 2003 he was a professor at the University of Göttingen . He has been Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University since 2005 and, at the same time, Director of Mathematics and Physics at the Simons Foundation since 2012.

He was visiting scholar at the École polytechnique , the IHES , the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, the Isaac Newton Institute , at Stanford University , Princeton University (1999 to 2003), the RIMS in Kyoto and Tokyo .

He is particularly concerned with rational points on algebraic varieties and other questions of arithmetic geometry. He is the editor of several anthologies and conference reports on arithmetic geometry, the Gauß-Dirichlet conference in Göttingen 2005 (with William Duke) and also co-editor (with Juri Zarhin) of the commemorative publication for his teacher Yuri Manin.

In 1995/96 Tschinkel was a Leibniz Fellow of the EU at the École normal supérieure in Paris , and in 2001/2 he was a Clay Mathematics Institute Fellow. In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Geometry over nonclosed fields ). Tschinkel has German citizenship. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2018 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
