Bjorn Mikhail Poonen (born July 27, 1968 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American mathematician who studies number theory and algebraic geometry .

Poonen studied mathematics and physics at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in 1989. In 1994 he received his doctorate with Kenneth Alan Ribet at the University of California, Berkeley ( The Mordell-Weil-Theorem, Rigidity and Pairings for Drinfeld Modules ). As a post-doctoral student , he was at MSRI and Princeton University in 1994/95 (instructor 1995 to 1997) before becoming an assistant professor at Berkeley in 1997 . In 2001 he became an associate professor there and in 2004 a professor. In 2008 he became a professor at MIT , where he is Claude Shannon Professor of Mathematics.

Among other things, he deals with rational points on algebraic varieties , number theory of elliptic curves and undecidability questions in number theory ( Hilbert's 10th problem ). He also published on algorithms like Shellsort .

With Felipe Voloch in 2006 (published 2010, Annals of Mathematics) he proved a conjecture about the Brauer-Manin obstruction for function bodies (that this is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle , according to which global solvability follows from local solvability).

Poonen was visiting scholar at Harvard, at MIT (visiting professor 2007), at the Isaac Newton Institute (1998 as Rosenbaum Fellow, 2005), at the University of Paris-Süd , at the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences and at the Institut Henri Poincaré . He is the founding editor of Algebra & Number Theory . From 2006 to 2008 he was editor of the International Mathematics Research Notices , 2003 to 2004 of the Journal of Number Theory and 1998 to 2006 of the Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux . He is invited speaker at the ICM 2018 (Heuristics for the arithmetic of elliptic curves).

As a student, he won the Putnam competition four times (1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988) and the US Mathematics Olympiad in 1985, and in the same year as a member of the US team, he won the silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Poonen was a Packard, Guggenheim, and Sloan Research Fellow and Miller Professor at Berkeley. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2011 he received the Chauvenet Prize for Undecidability in Number Theory. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He is invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro 2018 (Heuristics of the arithmetic of elliptic curves).
