geography
Costa Calma is a predominantly tourism-based place that was built in the late 1970s along a golden-yellow beach. Restaurants and shops were added to the first hotels, creating a real village. The whole place is quite hilly overall. The different parts of Costa Calma are separated by a green zone that runs lengthways through the whole place. This park is irrigated with the treated sewage from the hotels and is ideal for a relaxing walk. The flora of the area is otherwise extremely sparse.
The first hotels on Costa Calma were all of low construction, so that the multi-storey hotels for mass tourism that had arisen in many places could not be found here. The flat structures harmoniously integrated into the landscape were, however, supplemented by a large number of large-volume hotels in 2003 and 2004, so that a change has taken place here to the detriment of the earlier aesthetic impression. Due to the length of the resort, Costa Calma does not have a real center, but several shopping centers with bars and shops are focal points for the surrounding hotels and apartments.
General
Above all, German holidaymakers can be found in Costa Calma. There are many German-run cafés and small shops and the entertainment is mainly in German and rarely in English. The sandy beach, located directly on the Costa Calma in a sheltered bay, is about 1.5 km long and is particularly advantageous for families with children, because even small children can swim in the mostly calm water.
Attractions
One of the sights is the beach. Playa de Sotavento begins at Costa Calma and extends about 30 kilometers south to the tip of the island. In the north, however, the beach is bordered by black rocks that also protrude into the sea. In Costa Calma there is the largest forest on the island, which consists mainly of palm trees and other plants adapted to the dry climate of Fuerteventura. This forest only lives thanks to the artificial irrigation that every larger plant receives through drip irrigation. Purified wastewater from the sewage treatment plant is used.
The nearby Oasis Park with a cactus garden , tropical plants, African animals and various shows with animals is also interesting .
The winds are mostly offshore due to the location on the east coast , so there are less strong waves, hence the name ( calm coast ). Contrary to what the name suggests, the east coast of the Jandía peninsula is known for its strong winds, so windsurfing championships are held here regularly .
