geography
The town center lies in a valley between two rocky hills on the Atlantic . In the meantime, the place has also expanded over the two hills east and west of the valley. Behind the western hill is the port of the village, where a car ferry to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria leaves every day . The Jandía Playa hotel complex begins in the east of Morro Jable and extends for several kilometers along the sandy beach . To the north of the village there are low mountain range mountains of volcanic origin, which reach their highest point at Pico de la Zarza at 807 meters. The Atlantic Ocean lies south of the town.
The townscape is characterized by "cube-shaped" concrete houses, as they are typical for southern countries. They are separated by narrow, steep streets.
history
Morro Jable is an old fishing village. According to the inscription on its statue, it was founded in the center of Cirilo López Umpiérrez , who was the first to settle here in 1899. The place was relatively isolated in the desert of southern Fuerteventura until about 1970. However, when a road was built to Morro Jable, tourism began, which has meanwhile become decisive for the place. Numerous hotels built in the style of brutalism were built, which are terraced on the steep slopes along the coast. This made Morro Jable / Jandia Playa the most important center of tourism on Fuerteventura.
In the winter of 1972/73, the then German Chancellor Willy Brandt and his family and Foreign Minister Walter Scheel and his wife visited Morro Jable, which was still little developed at the time. At that time the place did not have a telephone connection, so that the members of the government had to keep in contact with Bonn by radio. In 2017, a bronze statue was unveiled on the beach promenade, accompanied by information boards, showing the Chancellor sitting on the beach. The sculpture is based on a photo by Robert Lebeck who accompanied Brandt.
Economy and Transport
Economically, the place, which lived from fishing for centuries, is today determined by tourism. In the 1970s and 1980s, the large hotels and shopping centers were built along the coastal road (FV-2), which is also the boulevard to the west of Playa Jandia ( Avenida del Saladar , Saladar = (protected) salt marshes between the beach and town), and today represent the main source of income of the place.
The FV-2 is the main road connection of the village. It leads northeast to the island's capital Puerto del Rosario and the airport. There are also some unpaved slopes, such as on the route to Cofete in the northwest of the Jandia peninsula. The local public transport is realized by the city bus lines L1, L2 and L3, which connect the place and the adjacent hotel complex Jandia Playa every 30 minutes. There are also bus connections to Costa Calma and the island's capital, Puerto del Rosario.
