Sperm whale skeleton

Sculpture of a sperm whale skeleton

In 2005, a 15 meter long sperm whale stranded near Matas Blancas on the Costa Calma . The Society for the Research of the Canarian Marine Mammals SECAC ( Sociedad para el Estudio de los Cetáceos en el Archipiélago Canario ) included the skeleton of the marine mammal in the project Senda de los Cetáceos ( Path of the Marine Mammals ), which since 2000 the skeletons of about one Plans to exhibit a dozen whales and dolphins in prominent locations in Fuerteventura. By then, the skeletons of a 19-meter-long fin whale south of the airport in Salinas del Carmen and an approximately six-meter-long Cuvier-beaked whale had been erected on the southernmost headland at the lighthouse of Punta de Jandía. The 14.5-meter-long skeleton of the sperm whale was placed on Avenida del Saladar near the Jandía Playa lighthouse. In November 2011, the skeleton was subjected to vandalism in which a fin was broken off and some teeth were removed from the jaw. It is believed that the target of the vandalism was the theft of ivory from the marine mammal's teeth. However, the restorers had already replaced the teeth with corresponding replicas before the skeleton was erected. In travel guides, the skeleton is referred to as an "ecological memorial".
