Tabaluga , a small green dragon , is a fairy tale character aimed at children , originally conceived by the German rock singer Peter Maffay , the children's songwriter Rolf Zuckowski and the long-time Maffay text writer Gregor Rottschalk . They created the theme in 1983 initially only for implementation as a concept album in the form of a rock fairy tale. Tabaluga, whose figure was developed by the children's book author Gisela von Radowitz and the children's book author and illustrator Helme Heine , lives in “grassland” and is now 7 years old, with every dragon year corresponding to 100 human years.

The Tabaluga success began with the concept album Tabaluga or the journey to reason (1983). Five more concept albums followed: Tabaluga and the shining silence (1986), Tabaluga and Lilli (1993), Tabaluga and happiness given away (2003), Tabaluga and the signs of the times (2011) and Tabaluga - Long live friendship (2015) . In addition, Merry Christmas with Tabaluga (2007) was released as an album with Christmas carols. There were also four tours: Tabaluga & Lilli (1994), Tabaluga and the given happiness (2003), Tabaluga and the signs of the times (2012) and Long live friendship (2016), of which recordings were made as live DVDs released.

There was also the musical Tabaluga & Lilli , which ran in Oberhausen in TheatrO CentrO (1999 to 2001) and of which a studio album of the songs was released. Tabaluga and the signs of the times - the 360 ​​° experience , fulldome show shown in numerous planetariums in Germany, has existed since 2014 .

There is also an animated television series (1997 to 2004) which is successfully broadcast in over 100 countries and some of the episodes are available on DVD. Tabaluga - The Film was released in 2018 . Numerous kindergartens and institutions now have Tabaluga in their name.

When the little dragon Tabaluga does not listen to his father Tyrion's morning admonitions, Tyrion sends him on a journey, as has always been the custom with dragons. Tabaluga should seek reason, which is not easy to recognize; he would like to rely on "the force that moves everything, the imagination".

On his journey Tabaluga meets the moon - he makes time; a queen ant who relies on unconditional work and order; the giant Grykolos and the tree of life . The fire salamander Pyromella notes that the two do not match; but if they can't be friends, at least they don't want to be enemies. This also shows him the tadpole school with the motto “Become a frog, but don't be a frog”. The stork Arafron gives Tabaluga the tip to interview the two hundred year old sea ​​turtle Nessaja and brings him to her. On the way he observes a group of dolphins that are simply enjoying their existence. At the end of his journey, Nessaja tells him that she never wanted to grow up and that she has remained a child deep down.

Tabaluga and the Shining Silence (1986)

The dragon Tabaluga has stolen a magical jade stone from his father Tyrion's pocket and is caught playing with the stone. Before he can give him a moral sermon, Tabaluga asks him what this thing called "love" is. Tyrion does not answer him and Tabaluga wishes to move to another location using the jade stone. At the end of a rainbow, Tabaluga meets a crying girl, the half-child - the daughter of the sun and the moon. She is sad and cannot love herself, since the "shining silence" is missing, she only has sadness. The rainbow advises Tabaluga to use the jade stone to find out what a world would be like without love. Tabaluga follows this advice and enters a machine world populated by human robots who consider themselves perfect and omniscient; however, he overwhelmed the robots with the question of “love”.

Tabaluga tries further to find out what love is, and travels on with the jade stone and arrives in the world of the constantly shapeshifting dream woman. When Tabaluga wakes up from his dream, he is surprised by Deimon - the hate - and his snake companion Bilingua - the envy; instead of facing them, however, Tabaluga disappears into the crystal world of ice, where he meets the ice princess. The chorus of lost souls, forever trapped in the ice, can warn Tabaluga to flee from the cold-hearted princess. When Tabaluga has left the ice world, he is greeted by the one who tells him that it is time for Tabaluga to accompany him. However, it turns out that there is a mix-up and he was supposed to pick up Tyrion Dragon. Meanwhile, Tyrion had set out to look for his son. In search of him, he is drawn into an argument and then into a fight by the four winds, the north, east, south and west winds, stimulated by Deimon. Tyrion is able to beat the winds to flight, but is seriously injured in battle and is killed by Deimon with a lightning strike to the heart. He regrets that he did not answer Tabaluga correctly when asked about love and did not tell him that he loved him. When Tabaluga learns of his father's death, he is sad. Death alerts him to the star Tyrion has become, and Tabaluga senses that he will always love his father.

When Tabaluga flies over the country at dawn the next day, he enjoys the life of nature and meets the rainbow again and the now happy half-child. In a white light of the merging colors of the rainbow, Tabaluga recognizes the luminous silence. Looking at all of those he met on his journey, he understands what love is.

Tabaluga and Lilli (1993)

On a cold winter full moon night, Tabaluga steps in front of the dragon's cave, where he hears a tempting unknown knocking noise. Curious, he soars into the air to follow the unknown sound. When he reached the ridge of the Dragon Mountains, he remembers how his father Tyrion had always forbidden him to cross them. Tabaluga thinks: "As long as I am young and my fire is still burning ..", he gives in to his curiosity and flies on to the land of Arktos . Nobody had seen him before; but it was said that he was very powerful.

While Tabaluga is flying over a crater, he sees Arktos personally at the bottom. Arktos spreads cold everywhere and freezes all life; so he creates a daughter there - Lilli - carved out of a block of ice. The light knocking makes Tabaluga aware. Fascinated by Lilli's graceful figure and beautiful face, Tabaluga lets out a hot jet of fire with enthusiasm; this makes Arktos so angry that he hurls raging bolts of ice at the intruder. Tabaluga skilfully runs away.

Safe, Tabaluga sits down exhausted on a ledge; thinking of Lilli he falls asleep. In a dream he meets his father and tells about the experience with Lilli. Tyrion lets his son know that he too is part of the * current of time * - as he gets older, he therefore has to deal with new things.

When Tabaluga wakes up the next morning, he feels hungry. He plans to nurse him with honey from a bee's nest on a nearby tree . The beekeepers prevent him from doing so at first. The queen bee instructs the little dragon to ask permission first - she grants him some honey. While Tabaluga is eating the honey, he tells the bees about his experience and asks about Lilli. Since the bees don't know them, they go back to work singing.

Meanwhile, Tabaluga discovers a column of smoke on the horizon - assuming that where there is fire, dragons could also be friends - he makes his way there. When he arrived there, he discovered that the smoke came from a volcano . The gate is wide open so that Tabaluga is curious to enter. In the crater room there are all kinds of technical devices for controlling volcanic activities. When Tabaluga feels attracted to a red button, the Kratermann (monitoring the equipment) instructs him not to touch it, as one does not play with red buttons. Although Tabaluga still had in his ear the words of his father Tyrion, which he preached to him before his first adventure, "And whoever wants to grow up must also become sensible", he pressed the button. Tabaluga mockingly replies that fear is just such a feeling. In doing so, he remembers that unknown feeling that he had felt in Lilli's presence. Tarantula wistfully replies that she knows this feeling, but that it is over for her and that her heart has felt icy ever since, even in warm September. Tarantula then frees Tabaluga, who then takes to the skies again and flies on.

At dusk he reaches a glass castle . Tabaluga enters and sees a large casino inside , in which silver foxes , white wolves and polar bears cavort at the gaming tables. When Tabaluga discovers Lilli standing in a showcase , this strange feeling comes back to him. Arktos comes up to him and hypocritically offers Tabaluga to put Lilli against Tabaluga's fire in a game of dice. He convinces Tabaluga by making it clear to him that life and love are like dice games and that if you don't dare, you can't win anything. Tabaluga wins this dice game, whereupon Arktos sticks a golden key in Lilli's back. He turns it a few times, causing Lilli to move; approaches Tabaluga, who happily embraces her. Lilli reveals to him that she is also how he feels. Meanwhile, her movements slow down until she freezes again. Arktos then explains to Tabaluga, gleefully, that Lilli only wakes up through his key to life - he thus has the key to power - whereupon he reveals his evil nature. When the entire crystal palace then collapses around Tabaluga, leaving him with Lilli's lifeless shell in a cold desert of sand and stone, Tabaluga wonders whether the latest events are a dream or a reality. He is aware that he won Lilli but lost at the same time. As a result, his hope of being happy with Lilli dies.

When Tabaluga at a nearby lake, flipping stones across the water, ponders how he can get Arktos' golden key, he is approached by the hermit crab Ostrakes . Cancer explains that the feeling that Tabaluga feels is an ancient and at the same time very powerful one. The key to true power can bring his love, Lilli, to life. The prerequisite for this is: Tabaluga melts the ice - around Lilli's heart - with its fire. He does it, Lilli comes to life. Happy they fall into each other's arms.

Tabaluga and the happiness given away (2003)

Many grassland years after defeating Arktos , Tabaluga is celebrating its seventh birthday (a dragon year is seven hundred grassland years ). Many friends and also Arktos, his adversary from his previous adventure with Lilli, have come to serenade him and bring him their presents. As a gift, he receives a number of different necklaces, which are hung directly around his neck by the giver. Tabaluga is hung with chains made of diamond , gold , silver , pearls , glass marbles , lucky clover and iron.

The many chains are very heavy and therefore uncomfortable to wear and so Arktos, who noticed this, offers to remove the heavy diamond chain from Tabaluga and exchange it for a chain made of unique but light ice crystals. Tabaluga gratefully accepts this offer and has Arktos put the ice crystal chain on her, which then immediately melts on his hot kite.

Tabaluga leaves its celebration and soars to fly over grassland. When he felt hungry, he came back to the friendly bees who had already fed him from their honey during his adventure with Lilli . This time, however, they don't want to just give him their precious honey. However, since their queen needed a new crown, they were willing to offer their honey in exchange for Tabaluga's gold chain. He gladly accepts the suggestion, eats some honey and flies on.

Then Tabaluga passes a sad stream, which wistfully complains that the glass beads have been stolen from his bed . To cheer up the stream, he takes off his chain of glass marbles, lets them slide into the bed of the stream and travels on. When a thunderstorm broke up, which split the tree of life , which Tabaluga got to know on his first adventure, with lightning, the dragon succeeds with a number of loyal friends and with the help of his iron chain to save the tree.

As Tabaluga travels on, he meets the unlucky fellow, to whom he leaves his lucky clover chain to rid him of his bad luck. The unlucky fellow flies away happily and when Tabaluga tries to follow suit, an ugly bastard emerges from the undergrowth. It is dissatisfied with its unsightly appearance and asks Tabaluga for help in making at least a slightly nicer appearance. Tabaluga then gave the dirty pig his beautiful pearl necklace, the dirty pig is happy and the dragon continues its journey.

At the edge of the forest, Tabaluga meets the silver fox , an old friend from Arktos' ice world, who wants to take advantage of Tabaluga's good-naturedness to steal his silver chain with a trick. Tabaluga sees through the ruse, simply gives the silver fox this last remaining necklace and then explains to her that he only needs fire to live.

To relieve the weight of the many heavy chains, Tabaluga feels as if he can move mountains. In high spirits, he decides to take the phrase literally, loads a medium-sized iceberg on his shoulders at the border to the ice world and proclaims in high spirits without wanting to jump over a crevasse without using his wings . However, the attempt fails. Tabaluga falls into the crevasse, remains uninjured, but gets stuck so unfavorably that he cannot free himself alone. When Arktos wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to seize grassland, the friends Tabaluga helped on his journey with the chains that were given away form a living chain that extends to the foot of the crevasse, and in this way liberate Tabaluga with this chain of the Friendship. When his rescuers teach Tabaluga a lesson on friendship, he wonders if he was doing his friends a wrong by giving away his birthday gift chains.

Then Nessaja appears, the wise old turtle that Tabaluga met on his first adventure, and gives Tabaluga a mirror as a birthday present. When Tabaluga looks into it and looks at his self-doubting reflection, he decides that he no longer wants to correspond to it. When he realizes that he is giving happiness to other friends, but has not given away his happiness, he is at peace with himself and has learned another important lesson.

Tabaluga and the Signs of the Times (2011)

When Tabaluga accidentally breaks his alarm clock in his cave on the Drakensberg so that it stops, he thinks he has stopped the time himself. A stone clears him of his mistake and Tabaluga thinks about his words. However, he cannot concentrate because he is bothered by a mayfly that is enjoying its short life to the full. Arktos, Tabaluga's archenemy since his adventure with Lilli, arrives and kills the fly.

Then death appears in the form of a good-humored stranger and explains to the little dragon that a life can always be of different lengths. When Tabaluga wanted to know more about time, death advised him to go to the king of the beasts, the lion. In the King's view, time is money and you can never have enough of either. But the dragon child is not satisfied with this answer.

When Tabaluga (in Tabaluga and the shining silence) his late father Tyrion appears in a dream during the night , Tabaluga asks him about the time. Tyrion replies that unfortunately you can't buy the time and that he unfortunately didn't have enough time for Tabaluga. When Tabaluga wakes up the next morning, he sets out to further unravel the time. There he meets his friends, who make their revolutionary demands such as more time for everyone or no time for nobody public.

Then the four seasons introduce themselves. At the song of the summer, Arktos begins to melt and after Tabaluga has amused himself a bit, he brings his beloved enemy, the snowman, back to his ice world. Arktos asks why he did that, and the little dragon replies that the two of them belong together.

After Tabaluga flew on for a while, he lands in a bazaar. On which a dealer wants to sell him a watch that shows 13 instead of the usual 12 hours. However, the dealer does not want to sell the “wonder watch” for money, but only against Tabaluga's fire. When the dealer turns out to be Arktos, Tabaluga goes on and passes other stalls, including a carpet dealer who wants to sell him a magic carpet that is timelessly beautiful. Tabaluga replies that without the time he is worthless to him. But when the dealer spreads the carpet, time appears in the person of a young woman and reveals itself to Tabaluga.

Time fulfills Tabaluga's greatest wish to dance one more time with his beloved Lilli. When the dance is over, Tabaluga realizes that time only lasts in dreams and says: “ The only thing that can really win over time is love ”. Time prophesies: “ There is a love that is stronger. Tabaluga - Long Live Friendship (2015)

The evil snowman Arktos attacks grassland and initiates a gigantic snow storm; as a result, Tabaluga is buried in a massive snow avalanche. A lucky bug and an army of ants can shovel Tabaluga free, but the little green dragon has lost its memory as a result of the attack. Bit by bit, however, the lucky beetle manages to restore Tabaluga's memories. When Tabaluga presses a red button in the control center of a volcano on the border between grassland and the ice world, the volcano suddenly erupts and spills lava and ash over the ice world and grassland. With the help of Arktos, they can cover the volcano with snow, and the joint rescue operation ultimately makes the two friends.

Tours and live albums

Maffay has so far given four successful Tabaluga tours, the concerts of which have all taken place in halls.

First, in 1994, the Tabaluga & Lilli tour was performed. The theme is a mix of the stories from the first and third concept albums. As musicians and actors, for example: Maffay with his band, Alexis , Rufus Beck , Anita Davis , Bertram Engel , Nino de Angelo , Robert Hart , Nadeen Holloway , Pascal Kravetz , Stephan Remmler , as well as many other dancers and actors. The live CD Tabaluga and Lilli - Live was released in 1994 (from April 11th / 12th, 1994) and in 2006 the live DVD Tabaluga & Lilli - Live , which contains a content similar to the CD and to the CD in the Westfalenhalle (Dortmund) was recorded.

The Tabaluga tour followed in 2003, and luck was given away . The theme is based on the story of the fourth concept album. Musicians and actors included: Maffay with his band, Rufus Beck, Heinz Hoenig, Udo Lindenberg , Sissi Perlinger , Rolf Stahlhofen and many other dancers and actors. Rufus Beck as the magician and Heinz Hoenig as Arktos were there again as actors alongside Peter Maffay and the band .
