Sulden ( Italian : Solda ) is a mountain village with about 400 inhabitants in the inner Sulden Valley in the western part of South Tyrol ( Italy ). It belongs to the municipality of Stilfs , lies at 1900  m slm altitude and is dominated by mountains of the Ortler Alps ; these include the Ortler , the Königspitze and the Zebrù . The Suldenbach flows through the village .

Tourism is Sulden's main livelihood in both summer and winter. The place has more than 2000 guest beds.

The mountaineer Reinhold Messner maintains a herd of yaks on the alpine pastures of Sulden . He has a tavern in the village in a restored mountain farm .

Ski Area

The Sulden ski area is located east of the three-thousanders Ortler ( 3905  m slm ), Königspitze and Zebrù It is between 1,900 and 3250  m and is operated by Seilbahnen Sulden GmbH. It includes 11 lifts and 44 kilometers of slopes.

There are 4 cable cars from the valley town of Sulden:

  • The Sulden am Ortler cable car leads from the valley station at Sulden in Vinschgau ( South Tyrol ) ( 1910  m ) to the mountain station at the Schaubachhütte ( Rifugio Città di Milano ) at an altitude of 2610  m , where it opens up the Madritsch ski area.
  • The pulpit lift leads from the valley station at 1850  m to the mountain station at 2348  m .
  • The Langenstein lift overcomes an altitude difference of 500 meters on the journey from the valley station at 1830 meters to the mountain station at 2330  m .
  • The 6-seater Rosimbahn cable car leads to the mountain station at 2,450  m .

The ski area is a member of the Ortler Skiarena and the Zwei Länder Skiarena .

Public buildings

The House of the Mountains , inaugurated on September 2, 1963, is a center for local mountain guides and the local mountain rescue service. The building is also home to the local parish hall, which is used for events such as slide shows or film evenings.

Museums

  • The Messner Mountain Museum Ortles is an underground museum created by Reinhold Messner. It opened in 2004 and is dedicated to ice cream .
  • The Alpine Curiosa is a small museum in the so-called “Flohhäusl”. Curious stories from mountaineering are exhibited there.
  • In the school and kindergarten building there is an extensive local history museum on the topics of the history of the place and the Ortler area, the development of tourism in the region and mountain warfare; supplemented by a mineral exhibition.
