The Messner Mountain Museum ( MMM for short ) is a museum project by Reinhold Messner in the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno . Six different locations form a mountain museum.

The project is built up from the MMM Firmian center and the MMM Juval , MMM Dolomites , MMM Ortles , MMM Ripa and MMM Corones satellites . Starting from the central structure, the routes between the center and the satellites are networked and the impressions along the way are also part of the museum. With the exception of the annual opening celebrations in the individual properties, all other events take place centrally in Firmian .

Firmian

The headquarters of the museum project is located in the late medieval complex of Sigmundskron Castle near Bozen (location: ). The administration and the rooms for events are located here. There is a rock theater that seats 200 people. The museum was opened on June 11, 2006 after three years of construction, during which the almost ruined castle was restored and rebuilt.

Firmian's concept is based on the three strands of castle, renovation and exhibitions. The appearance of the castle should not be disturbed by the modern renovations. The architect Werner Tscholl made sure that the historical walls could retain their originality, in which, for example, the new glass roof constructions and pipes of all kinds are not visible from the outside.

The actual MMM Firmian is located on an area of 1100 square meters . The theme of the MMM Firmian is the history and art of mountaineering. Messner wants to show " what the mountain does to people " and to educate people about the mountain and the people in the mountains. He shows this with the help of pictures, sculptures and symbolic objects as well as memorabilia from various expeditions, which are exhibited on a course through the castle. In addition, Messner shows the history of alpinism and the effects of alpinism and tourism on nature and the environment. In the so-called White Tower there is a separate exhibition on the history of the castle and the region.

Between the Sciliar and the Texel Group outside - art, installations, relics inside - the spacious facility provides a course. The paths, stairs and towers lead visitors from the depths of the mountains, where the origins and exploitation of the mountains can be traced, through the religious significance of the peaks as a guide and bridge to the afterlife, to the history of mountaineering and alpine tourism of our day. The religious dimension of the mountains and their inhabitants is made clear to the visitor by a large number of objects from Asian cultures that are attached or set up in the castle complex.

The Firmian Museum “is an authoritarian museum that dictates how it is to be visited. The tour leads around the 'holy mountain', past vetrines, sculptures, stuffed animals, symbolic objects, photos and images, memories of numerous expeditions around the world. The castle ruins and the black steel structures placed in the towers are stages. The tour around the holy mountain is called a kora in Tibet, and Reinhold Messner wanted to create a kora with his museum. The crumbling chapel on the top of Castle Mountain is taboo like the summit of Kailash in Tibet. "

Juval

Juval Castle

This part of the MMM with Juval Castle near Naturns (location: ) is also housed in a late medieval castle complex and was inaugurated in 1995. The castle is located above the narrow Schnalstal gorge near Naturns and was built by Hugo von Montalban in 1278. It has been in Messner's private property since 1983 and is used by him as his summer residence.

The MMM deals with the myth of the mountain. It is mainly about the sacred mountains of the world, such as Kailash , Fujisan or Ayers Rock . In addition, Tibetan exhibits such as precious Buddha sculptures and a huge prayer wheel are shown. There is also an exhibition about Gesar Ling an epic Tibetan king, a tantra room and an expedition room in the basement. Finally, a collection of masks and objects from the viewer are ethnic religions and mountain images in the dungeon presented.

Dolomites

Dolomites: museum in the clouds

The MMM Dolomites is located on Monte Rite , in a fort from the First World War between Valle del Boite and Val di Zoldo (location: ), at an altitude of 2181 meters . This museum in the clouds was opened in 2002 and focuses on the vertical world of the Dolomites. The development history of the Dolomites as well as part of the alpine history and its protagonists are shown.

Ortles

Below the Ortles in Sulden (location: ) the fourth part of the MMM is located underground. Since the opening in 2004, the theme of Eternal Ice and Ortler with exhibitions on skiing, ice climbing, the Arctic and Antarctic has been located on an exhibition area of 300 square meters. The visitor gets a glimpse into the depths of the mountains and a glacier.

Also in Sulden is the Alpine Curiosa exhibition area in a twelve square meter former mountaineering hut, called Flohhäusl (location: ), in which the presentation of 13 legendary mountaineering stories (from Yogi Milarepa to Messner himself) enables a different interpretation of alpinism and alpine curiosities are on display.

Ripa

The fifth part of the MMM was created with the MMM Ripa (MMM Bergvölker) at Bruneck Castle above the city of Bruneck (location: ) and opened in July 2011. It is an interactive museum that is intended to offer various mountain peoples a forum to exchange experiences with the local population. The guests from different mountain regions should each spend a summer here and report from their lives. Messner thinks of Sherpa , Indians , Tibetans , Mongols or Hunza , for example .

Corones

The Messner Mountain Museum on Plan de Corones

The sixth and last part of the MMM was handed over to its destination on July 24, 2015 on the Kronplatz ( 2275  m ), Bruneck’s home and ski mountain (location: , South Tyrol). The well-known architect Zaha Hadid was responsible for designing the museum . This museum focuses on the subject of 'rock, climbing and mountaineering'. There will be no other museums, according to Messner, who when the museum opened the completed MMM project as his “15th Eight-thousanders ". The MMM Corones is located on the summit plateau of Plan de Corones at 2,275 meters above sea level and, according to those responsible for the museum, one of the highlights, in addition to the architecture by Zaha Hadid, is the imposing mountain panorama.

Costs and financing

The cost of the project is estimated at up to 30 million euros. These are divided between Messner and the Province of South Tyrol. The latter finances the expansion of the old walls, in return Messner has to maintain his exhibitions for 30 years without subsidies. The restoration of the former fort on Monte Rite was carried out by the Veneto region together with the municipality of Pieve di Cadore . The renovation and design of MMM Bergvölker is estimated to cost between three and four million euros, 80% of which will be borne by the State of South Tyrol in order to provide financial support to the municipality of Bruneck.

criticism

The project is not without controversy. Messner was accused of creating a " Messner mausoleum " for himself . Furthermore, the MMM was referred to as " Disneyland ", which is destroying the South Tyrolean culture. Particular opposition came from the media company Athesia , whose supposed monopoly of opinion Messner had often criticized.
