Theodor Christomannos
Theodor Christomannos (born July 31, 1854 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ; † January 30, 1911 in Meran , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian judge and lawyer. He is considered a pioneer of tourism in South Tyrol .
Life
As the son of Greek-born merchants Christomannos studied at the University of Innsbruck in 1873/74 initially Medicine , from 1875 law . He was a member of the Corps Gothia Innsbruck (1873), the Academic Choral Society and the Corps Lusatia Leipzig (1875). At the first congress of the Austrian corps in Melk in 1879 , it was he who prevented the separation of academic ( Kösener ) and technical ( Weinheimer ) corps as in Germany. His right hand was mutilated on a scale length in Strasbourg . From then on he worked as a left-hander, which severely handicapped him on later mountain tours in the ice and made rock climbing almost impossible.
In 1884 he was at the University of Vienna to Dr. iur. PhD . He became a judge at the Innsbruck Regional Court. In 1887 he established himself as a lawyer in Merano . As an enthusiastic mountaineer , he was on the board of the Merano section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club from 1891 .
Christomannos was an influential politician of the German Freedom Party , for which he sat in the Tyrolean state parliament from 1905 . He saw the economic development of southern Tyrol as a life's work , especially the expansion of the transport network and the promotion of tourism . As the driving force behind the Association for Alpine Hotels I. Rank in Tyrol, he was committed to the construction of the road to Sulden , the Suldenhotels (opened in 1893), the Trafoi and Karersee Hotel (opened in 1896), the Great Dolomite Road Bozen-Cortina Toblach and the Vinschgau Railway .
At the end of 1910 he commissioned the portrait painter Ferdinand Behrens to make a portrait of himself. However, due to his unexpected death, it was not completed until 1911. Behrend's portraits were based on photographs.
Christomannos had had a heart condition for a long time. In addition to the flu , he suffered from pleurisy , from which he died. He was buried on February 1, 1911 in the city cemetery of Merano in a communal grave of honor .
The Christomannos memorial designed by Willy Zügel , above the Karer Pass near Vigo di Fassa , unveiled on September 24, 1912 and later partially destroyed - a 2.70 m high bronze eagle weighing 350 kg - was renovated in 1959.
His uncle was the chemist Anastasios Christomanos , his cousin was Constantin Christomanos , the Greek teacher and occasionally the reader of Empress Elisabeth .
