Ludwig Norman-Neruda was the son of the Moravian violinist Wilma Neruda and the Swedish composer and conductor Fredrik Vilhelm Ludvig Norman . He studied in Antwerp and in his final years settled in Asolo Italy. He met a tragic death when he fell while climbing the five-finger tip in the Langkofel group in South Tyrol . After a few hours he died of his serious injuries in Ortisei in Val Gardena.

Because he was not of a Catholic denomination, he was buried in unconsecrated ground . The grave was separated from the rest of the cemetery by a metal fence until the death chapel was built around the year 2000. Neruda's tombstone in Val Gardena porphyry was placed on the northern wall of the cemetery chapel.

His wife May accompanied him on his last ascent and, in addition to his alpine achievements, described this accident in her book.

Ludwig Norman-Neruda was also a painter, but nothing is known about his work.

First ascents

With the Swiss mountain guide Christian Klucker , Norman-Neruda made the following first ascents :

On July 6, 1893, he and his wife and mountain guide Antonio Tavernaro made the first ascent of Cima Wilma in the Pala group , which was named after their daughter Wilma.

The Norman-Neruda route on the northeast face of the Liskamm , which he climbed on August 9, 1890 with Christian Klucker and Josef Reinstadler , was named after him .
