Enostome in the head of the first metacarpal bone

The enostome , also compact island , enosteom or engl. Called bone island , is an island of cortical bone in the medullary canal , usually a long bone . The enostome is a frequent, benign secondary finding and presents itself as a mostly ovoid or round zone of increased density ( sclerosis ). This finding is negative on skeletal scintigraphy and can thus be differentiated from osteoplastic (bone-forming) bone metastases .
