Vigo di Fassa ( Ladin Vich (de Fascia) , German outdated Vig im Fassatal ) is a fraction of the municipality ( comune ) San Giovanni di Fassa in Trentino in the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol . The place has been a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy) association since 2017 .

Vigo di Fassa is about 57 kilometers north-northeast of Trento in the central Fassa Valley on the SS 241 state road from Bozen to Canazei , which crosses the Karer Pass west of Vigo .
history
Until December 31, 2017, Vigo di Fassa was an independent municipality. In a referendum on November 20, 2016, the inhabitants of the municipalities of Vigo and Pozza di Fassa voted for the merger of the two municipalities, while the inhabitants of Mazzin and Soraga also rejected a merger of their municipalities.
On December 31, 2017, the municipality of Vigo di Fassa had 1257 inhabitants on an area of 26.7 km². The municipality bordered directly on the province of Bolzano . Neighboring communities were Moena , Pozza di Fassa and Soraga in Trentino and Welschnofen in South Tyrol.
Demographics
Vigo di Fassa had around 411 households . According to the figures of the ten-yearly census of the ISTAT , the population increased in the period from 1991 to 2001 by 14.6% from 936 to 1073 inhabitants and from 2001 to 2011 by a further 12.5% to 1207 inhabitants.
Tourism and sport
Vigo di Fassa is located in the mountain range of the Dolomites and is the preferred starting point for mountain, ski and climbing tours in the Rosengarten group .
The Ciampedie cable car , whose valley station is in the center of the village, leads to the natural terrace of the same name at an altitude of 1998 m, from which a panoramic view from the rose garden to the Pale di San Martino is possible.
In winter, the Ciampedie is the center of the ski area of the same name. A red slope (valley run to Vigo di Fassa) was named after the Italian ski racer Gustav Thöni, who was successful in the 1970s . A black slope is dedicated to his future ski student Alberto Tomba , who was successful as an Italian ski racer in the 1990s.
In the summer, various Italian football clubs occasionally prepare for the season in the local sports center, for example AC Turin , Sampdoria Genoa , US Lecce and Lazio Rome .
Culture
The Ladin Cultural Institute is located in Vigo, where works and buildings of Ladin culture are protected, cataloged and, in collaboration with the Ladin Museum, made accessible to the public in parts.
