Shirley Russell

Shirley Russell , nee Shirley Kingdon , (born March 11, 1935 in London , England , † March 4, 2002 in England) was a British costume designer .

Life

Russel was married to director Ken Russell between 1956 and 1978 , with whom she had five children. During this time, she worked as a costume designer on nine of his films, including Loving Women and Tommy . In 1970 she received a BAFTA Film Award nomination in the category Best Costumes for Loving Women . After the divorce in 1978, she lived with assistant director Jonathan Benson , who had worked frequently for Ken Russell. She received her first Oscar nomination for best costume design for the first feature film after their divorce, Michael Apted's drama The Secret of Agatha Christie . In the same year she received the BAFTA Film Award Yanks - Yesterday We Were Strangers . She received a second Oscar nomination in 1982. Her other awards include a nomination for the Saturn Award , three BAFTA Awards out of a total of nine nominations and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy .
