Richard Chew
Richard Franklin Chew (born June 28, 1940 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film editor and Oscar winner .
Life
Richard Franklin Chew was born on June 28, 1940 to Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles . He served in the United States Navy . After graduating from UCLA with a degree in philosophy , he studied at Harvard Law School . He then began a career in Seattle in the 1960s as an assistant editor for a local television station. Shortly thereafter, he started editing documentaries and thus made his contacts in order to be able to move to San Francisco in the early 1970s , from where he made the leap into the film business.
After Chew edited The Redwoods for the first time on his own initiative, a short documentary, his first cut in the drama Der Dialog received a British Academy Film Award for Best Editing . In particular, for the two movies One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Star Wars , he came for a Oscar nomination and a BAFTA Award, where he, together with Paul Hirsch and Marcia Lucas , 1978 for Star Wars for the Best Editor Award.
Richard Chew has been married to Barbara Dunn since 1969 and has a son with her.
