history
The region is named after the Whitsunday Islands , the offshore archipelago, which got its name " Whitsunday Islands " from the explorer James Cook . For a long time, the center of the coastal region in front of the islands was Proserpine, which has about 3300 inhabitants. In 1910 the Proserpine Shire was founded as a local administrative unit. From the 1960s tourism grew in the region and in the 1980s the population of the coastal towns overtook that of Proserpine, which is inland. Several of these places merged to form the Town of Whitsunday in 1987 and in 1989 the Shire was also given this name.
As early as 1863, the coastal town of Bowen, north of Proserpine, received municipal status, and the surrounding, agricultural region was given its own local administration under the name Wangaratta in 1879. In 1960, Bowen Town and the Warangatta Shire were merged to form the Bowen Shire. Today's Whitsunday Region emerged from the two Shires Whitsunday and Bowen during the major LGA reform in 2008.
administration
The Whitsunday Regional Council has seven members. Six councilors are elected by the residents of the six divisions (constituencies). The council chairman and mayor (mayor) is also elected by all residents of the region.
