The Revenge of the Eggheads

The Superkutel is a 1987 American comedy film and the first sequel to the hit 1984 comedy Revenge of the Eggheads .

action

The fraternity Lambda Lambda Lambda (Tri-Lambs) is planning their vacation in Fort Lauderdale , Florida . However, Lewis has to travel alone with his friends because Gilbert broke his leg in a risky maneuver while playing chess . That doesn't hurt the trip, however, because after a pleasant flight, Florida is the hoped-for relaxation paradise and while the friends relax by the pool, Lewis tries to enroll in the Royal Flamingo Hotel . However, he learns from the beautiful blonde receptionist that all bookings of the tri-lambs have been canceled and the alpha betas have been overwritten. These have always been on a confrontation course with the nerds in the past . So the tri-lambs have to look for a new hotel and find what they are looking for in Hotel Coral Essex , an extremely shabby hostel.

Meanwhile, Sunny learns that the rooms are free and only the hotel manager said that he doesn't want any nerds in his hotel. Roger, chairman of Alpha-Betas, is also planning how to get rid of the tri-lambs and has an idea. During a night excursion into the jungle, the Tri-Lambs see a young woman apparently being kidnapped by the Seminoles , an Indian tribe in Florida. In order to save them, they pursue the Indians and fall into the trap of the alpha betas, who have only disguised themselves as Indians and demand that the nerds should go away. After she had to get rid of almost all of her clothes, they fled back to their hotel, humiliated.

When they meet at the big convention the next day , the Tri-Lambs are again faced with the Alpha Betas who chair this gathering of several fraternities. And it gets worse, because Roger also brings a referendum with the number 15 to the vote, which should ensure that all nerds are excluded from the convention. But the Tri-Lämmer do not accept that and organize a larger party where they perform as a musical act to advertise that all other student associations vote against it. When both the celebration and the referendum fall in favor of the Tri-Lambs, the wide world of alpha betas and the large hotel room seems to be open to them. Now you can finally enjoy your well-deserved vacation. And so they are invited to the beach by Sunny and her friends. After enjoying the day, they drive back to the hotel and are arrested by the police for alleged car theft and put in jail.

And that's where the disappointment runs deep, because the Tri-Lambs not only know how to finish their college, but Lewis is also personally disappointed in Sunny because he trusted her. After being taken out of prison by Stewart, a work colleague of Sunny, she is already waiting for Lewis and tries to apologize to him several times, but he doesn't really believe her and tries to avoid her. And just at that moment, he, Sunny and the rest of the tri-lambs are kidnapped by the Alpha-Betas and carried off at sea, where they are thrown into the open sea in front of an uninhabited island. After Sunny jumped after voluntarily, Roger notices that ogres cannot be trusted because he seems to be a bit talkative, which is why he throws them right after them. But Ogre can't swim and only becomes his displeasure shortly before drowning, he is a convinced alpha beta who hates all nerds from the bottom of his heart, rescued by a Tri-Lambda and pulled ashore. Since it is not possible to escape for the time being, everyone spends the night on the island.

After Lewis has a dream with his best friend Gilbert that gives him courage and hope to escape, everyone gets to work the next morning. They quickly find out which island they are on and that a former Cuban officer once hid his equipment on the island. After they have found them, they use a military amphibious vehicle to get to the convention as quickly as possible, because Roger is meanwhile planning to exclude the tri-lambs from the community in their absence for the supposed criminal machinations after the failure of his application. And exactly at this moment the tri-lambs break through the wall of the room and disrupt the conference. After they convicted Roger of the lie and kicked him into the pool, the Tri-Lambs were allowed to stay in the student union, despite all the criticism from the Alpha Betas.

Back at Adams College, Ogre is honored with Lambda Lambda Lambda.

criticism

Both professional critics and the general public received the film negatively. The Rotten Tomatoes website only counts one positive out of 18 professional reviews, which corresponds to a value of 6%. Of 25,037 users, only 39% rated the film positively. This in turn is confirmed by the online film archive IMDb , another platform on which normal users can submit their film reviews, because there 5,883 users gave the film an average of 4.3 out of 10 possible points. (As of October 9, 2011)

Janet Maslin in the New York Times found that the film offered little more than the average of a comedy (is at least slightly more varied than the average fraternity-boy comedy) and criticized the screenwriter Larry B. Scott for the stereotypical homosexuals in the film ( there's nothing good that Larry B. Scott can do with the script's stereotypically limp-wristed homosexual character) . However, she found the characters, especially Carradine, who played Lewis Skolnick, likable (Mr. Carradine [...] is likable) .

In the Chicago Sun-Times , Roger Ebert taught that the film didn't show nerds, just a few interesting people. Because nerds are not just people who are familiar with computers, but nerds who lack elegance in life (A nerd is a nerd because he brings a special lack of elegance to life) . The real nerds in the movie are, of course, the Alpha-Betas, and they get defeated and humiliated , unfortunately, in an uncomfortable way , are the alpha-betas who are defeated and humiliated at the end of the movie at the end, but not in a funny way.) . And so he continued to pound the film, because the script could not be surpassed in idiocy, since its story simply meant nothing in all the actions (As screenplays go, this is as idiotic as it gets. And yet the story means nothing in these enterprises .) .

For Hal Hinson of the Washington Post , the movie was just stupid and just made you feel stupid ("Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise" is - stupid dumb. This is a movie that [...] make you feel dumb) .

The lexicon of international films said that "of the many jokes that this meeting gives rise to, [...] only very few" ignite.

occupation

Julia Montgomery only starred in three of the four Revenge of the Nerds films. In The Superman , she turned down the role of Betty because the first scene in the script originally stated that Betty would cheat on Lewis. She said that this would not correspond to the character of Betty and even after director Joe Roth agreed to rewrite the scene at her discretion, continued to refuse to work. There is only one photo of her wearing a cowboy hat, which Lewis puts into the suitcase in the first shot of the film.

In addition, Bernie Casey , Brian Tochi and Ted McGinley, known from the first film , no longer play with and for Timothy Busfield in the role of Arnold Poindexter it was the last appearance. However, Poindexter can be seen on the poster for the fourth film, Chaos Kings , although he was neither featured nor mentioned in the film. Anthony Edwards , who can only be seen at the beginning and end of the film as Gilbert Lowe, and Andrew Cassese as Harold Wormser were replaced by different actors in the two sequels.

Trivia

The film shows many references to other well-known films. The opening credits are already introduced comparable to the Star Wars opening credits . And when this ends, the intro music changes slightly to the theme of the Terminator movie. In the English version, after landing in Fort Lauderdale, Oger says "they're heeeere", which is a quote from The Poltergeist in the respective pronunciation and intonation . The scene between Boger and his supposed master Snotty is also an allusion to the Karate Kid . Sunny's answer to the question of who the hotel manager is is also a reference to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre . Fred C. Dobbs was the name of the character played by Humphrey Bogart .

publication

The film hit US cinemas on July 10, 1987, and grossed just under $ 7.9 million of its nearly $ 10 million production cost in 1351 theaters on the opening weekend. The film went straight to number 1 on the box office and was able to relegate Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket , which grossed only 6.1 million US dollars in 881 cinemas, to number two. Overall, the film was able to bring in almost 30 million US dollars, which is 10 million less than its predecessor, The Revenge of the Eggheads .

In Germany the film was released directly on VHS on January 9, 1989 , and the DVD release was released on October 1, 2003 .

The film is the first of three sequels to the hit comedy The Revenge of the Eggheads (1984). While this film was still in theaters, Operation Kleinhirn (1992) and Chaos Kings (1994) were only produced for television. Even the planned television series never came about , despite the airing of the pilot film on FOX in 1991 and precisely because of its negative reviews.
