John Wilkinson (sound engineer)

John K. Wilkinson (born April 13, 1920 in Hartford , Connecticut , † April 28, 2002 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American sound engineer who won an Oscar in 1987 and was nominated for two more.

Life

Wilkinson worked in the technical field for several years after completing his studies. After being at the Yale University had a doctorate in the field of development and design, he moved to Hollywood , where he turned to the tone and his first job in the sound team of the film The Colossus of New York ( The Colossus of New York , 1958) delivered.

Wilkinson had found his professional field and was involved in many film and television productions in the following years, for example the western series Bonanza and The Rebel . Of the feature films he has worked on, Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Chinatown (1974), The Marathon Man (1976), Black Sunday (1977), Saturday Night Fever (1977), Heaven Should Wait ( 1978), In the Embers of the South (1978), Outland - Planet of the Damned (1981) and Wall Street (1987). For the war drama Platoon , Wilkinson was awarded an Oscar in 1987 together with Charles Grenzbach , Simon Kaye and Richard D. Rogers. There was an Oscar nomination in the category "Best Sound" in 1979 together with Robert W. Glass Jr. , John T. Reitz and Barry Thomas for the film drama In der Glut des Südens ( Days of Heaven ), the Oscar to Richard Portman , William McCaughey , Aaron Rochin and C. Darin Knight and the film drama the Deer Hunter ( the Deer Hunter ) went. In the 1982 Oscar nomination, Wilkinson, Robert W. Glass Jr., Robin Gregory and Robert M. On his death, Wilkinson left behind his wife Val Jean and a son and daughter. He died of heart failure at his home in Southern California at the age of 82.
