Deadly hiding place (reference title: Final Scream - You are not alone , original title: Hider in the House ) is an American thriller by Matthew Patrick from 1989 .

action

Tom Sykes is abused by his parents in childhood. He kills her by setting fire to his house. He was then treated in a psychiatric clinic for years. At his last meeting, the attending physician still considers Sykes to be very dangerous, but his manager believes that there is no further action against Sykes.

As an adult, Sykes secretly lives in the attic of an empty house bought by the Dreyer family. Sykes is obsessed with Julie Dreyer. When his hiding place is discovered by a pest controller, he kills him. Later he contacts Julie's children and helps them out of sticky situations. He pretends to be a neighbor to Julie and can gradually build up a good relationship with her. At the same time he steals office supplies from Julie's husband, Phil, which leads to an initial argument between the spouses. Phil therefore renews his affair with Tina, although he does not love her. Sykes manages to direct Julie in such a way that she catches Phil with Tina. Then she forces Phil to move out. When Julie finds her dead dog in the garden, she is scared and asks her friend Rita to stay with her over the weekend. Sykes accidentally kills Rita while trying to explain his presence to her. Sykes clears all of Phil's calls on the answering machine and finally asks Julie out on a date, which she declines on the grounds that it is not the right time. While Sykes is intrusive, Phil appears, whereupon Sykes retreats into his hiding place. Phil and Julie make up. When Phil leaves the house with the children, Julie discovers Syke's hiding place. This threatens her, but she can gain time. When Phil comes back, Sykes puts him out of action. Sykes then threatens Julie, who shoots him. He was shot, but not dead yet. He steals the revolver from her and tries to kill himself and Julie. The police, alerted by the children, shoot Sykes in time.
