action

Two very different fifteen-year-old girls meet at a holiday camp: the boyish and not on the lips of Angel comes from a rather simple background, the well-behaved Ferris comes from a good family. Spurred on by their comrades in the camp, a competition breaks out between the two of them, which of them loses their innocence first this summer. It doesn't take long for Angel and Ferris to find suitable male "objects of seduction": While Angel tries her luck with Randy , a cool guy from the neighboring camp, Ferris approaches Gary , the more mature sports teacher. At the end of summer, however, both of them realize the real size of their stake ...

background

The film was shot in Atlanta and Covington, Georgia . Filming for the camp scenes took place in Hard Labor Creek State Park .

Tatum O'Neal, who had already won an Oscar for her role in the film Paper Moon in 1973 at the age of ten , was allowed to choose which role she would like to play in the film and chose Ferris .

Kristy McNichol began smoking for her role as tomboy Angel , but was unable to break the habit after filming was over.

The world premiere took place on March 21, 1980 in New York City . On August 14, 1980, Kleine Biester was shown in West German cinemas. In 2012 the film was released on DVD.

Reviews

"A film about teenage girls suffering from puberty, which is optically discreet, but for large parts it is completely stuck to the cliché of films and only shows caution and empathy in the last third."

Little Beasts is a fun teen comedy that is especially fun thanks to the two leading actresses Tatum O'Neal as Ferris and Kristy McNichol as Angel . [...] First love, first sex, good friends, good enemies - despite its light story, the film embodies a bit of an attitude towards life and is therefore not part of the old film journey even after all this time. "

- Melanie Frommholz on Moviesection.de

Little Beasts wants to make it unmistakably clear [...] that sex is bad at the age of 15, friendship is good and abstinence is the answer to all questions. But if you overlook this moral hint, you will be rewarded with Kristy McNichol's portrayal of the rude talking, Malboro smoking kid who competes with Paul Newman with his groin kicks, while Matt Dillon [...] and the soundtrack for a welcome ease to care."

- Time Out Magazine

"A well-cast and played, but sometimes also quite clichéd puberty spectacle about the first 'experiences' of young girls."

- Prisma TV Guide

Awards and nominations

Kristy McNichol received a nomination for the Young Artist Award 1981 for her acting performance .

Soundtrack

The film was accompanied by the music of many well-known artists from the time. If the original soundtrack was still preserved on the first VHS release of the film, it was replaced by other songs for copyright reasons on the second edition. The following songs were originally featured in the film:
