Cynthia Ellen Nixon (born April 9, 1966 in New York ) is an American film, television and theater actress and politician of the Democratic Party . She became internationally known as the actress who played the lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the television series Sex and the City (1998 to 2004).

2018 Nixon participated in the preselection of the Democratic Party for the governorship of the State of New York in part, but was defeated by incumbent Andrew Cuomo .

life and career

Cynthia Nixon is the only child of the couple Anne and Walter Nixon. She attended Hunter College High School before graduating from Barnard College in 1988 with a BA in English. Cynthia Nixon is not related to the family of former US President Richard Nixon .

She made her television debut in 1979 in an episode of the family series NBC Special Treat, and at the age of 13 she was in front of the camera in her first feature film, Little Beasts (1980). 1982 Nixon played at their subsequent page Sex and the City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker in the TV movie This is my child! In the film drama Amadeus (1984) directed by Miloš Forman , which won an Oscar , she played the maid Lorl. In 1985 she had a supporting role in Robert Altman's comedy Black Cats . A number of television films and series followed before she returned to the big screen in a smaller role in Barry Sonnenfeld's The Addams Family in Crazy Tradition in 1993 . Her next film roles were in the comedy Juniors Day Off (1994) and on the side of Meryl Streep , Diane Keaton , Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in Marvin's Daughters (1996).

Her international breakthrough finally came as a lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the television series Sex and the City (1998 to 2004). In addition to several nominations for a Golden Globe , she received the coveted Emmy Award for her performance in 2004 .

After the series ended, she played the role of Eleanor Roosevelt in the television movie Warm Springs (2005) . She was honored with a nomination for a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her performance. She celebrated the biggest commercial success of her career to date with Sex and the City - Der Film and Sex and the City 2 . The films grossed over US $ 703.5 million worldwide .

In addition to her television and film career, Nixon is also a successful stage actress. From 1980 to 1981 she played on Broadway in the play The Philadelphia Story and was honored with the 1981 Theater World Award . She had other engagements on Broadway. a. with The Heidi Chronicles (1989 to 1990) and Angels in America (1993 to 1994). In 1995, Nixon was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in the play Indiscretions . In June 2006 she won a Tony Award for best actress in the Broadway play Rabbit Hole . Her last stage performance she had in 2012 in the lead role in Wit by Margaret Edson .

In her private life, the actress was in a relationship with Danny Mozes, an English teacher and photographer, from 1988 to 2003. Together they have a daughter (born November 1996) and a son (born December 2002). Nixon has been in a relationship with Christine Marinoni since 2004. In an interview with New York Magazine in early September 2006, she said: “There was no internal struggle, nor was there any effort to suppress anything. I just met this woman and fell in love with her. ”Nevertheless, she was very surprised by the media hype that this relationship triggered. In 2009, the couple announced their engagement. Marinoni gave birth to a son in February 2011. On May 27, 2012, Nixon married her partner.

Nixon contracted breast cancer in 2006 , but initially kept it a secret. She could be healed for now.

Applying to be a candidate for New York gubernatorial election

Nixon ran in 2018 with the area code of the Democratic Party for the post of governor of New York against the incumbent Andrew Cuomo . She announced this on March 19, 2018 via Twitter. In her campaign, Nixon accused Governor Cuomo, in particular, of a lack of profile as a progressive and represented more left-wing positions than the incumbent in her election campaign. Among other things, she called for nationwide statutory health insurance at the state level and greater commitment from the state of New York to modernizing the largely ailing New York City Subway . Unlike Nixon, Cuomo was able to count on the support of well-known party leaders such as ex-Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton . The two US Senators for New York, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand , also supported Cuomo's renewed candidacy. In the vote on September 13th, Nixon received almost 35% of the vote, Cuomo 65%.
