After studying law , Schumer went into politics. In 1974 Schumer was elected the youngest member of the New York State Assembly , and in 1980 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives . Schumer has been a Senator for New York State since 1999. In his first election to the Senate in 1998, he won a victory against the Republican incumbent Al D'Amato , who had previously served in the Senate for 18 years; previously he had prevailed in the primary of his party against the former vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro (1935-2011). In 2004 he won by a large majority against the Republican Howard Mills and was thus confirmed in office. He also won the election in November 2010 .

In 2016 he ran against Republican candidate Wendy Long and won that election too. Deregulation of the financial markets

The New York Times reported on Schumer's role in the banking crisis in December 2008 . Like no other Democrat in Congress, Schumer campaigned for the deregulation of the financial markets, including measures that are said to have contributed to the financial crisis. Schumer protected important market players from regulatory oversight and stricter rules and saved financial institutions from taxes and charges in the billions.

In 1987 Schumer wrote another article against deregulation titled Don't Let Banks Become Casinos :

"Leading the pressures of stiff global financial competition, major American banks are pushing to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act , a law that keeps banks from trading volatile and risky securities. Your pleading should be resisted ... "

As a senator in 1999, Schumer campaigned heavily for the repeal of the second Glass-Steagall Act . He wrote:

"There are many reasons for this law, primarily to ensure the continued competitiveness of US financial institutions."

In the period from 2005 to 2010, some insurance companies and some investment firms were the largest donors to Schumer's campaign before the 2010 Senate election .

Private life

On September 24, 1980, Schumer married Iris Weinshall, with whom he has two daughters. The family lives in Park Slope , Brooklyn. In January 2007, Schumer published the book Positively American .
