P. Henry Dugro

Philip Henry Dugro (born October 3, 1855 in New York City , † March 1, 1920 ibid) was an American lawyer , politician and hotelier. Between 1881 and 1883 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Philip Henry Dugro was born and raised in New York City about six years before the outbreak of the Civil War . During this time he attended public schools, graduating from Columbia College (now Columbia University ) Art School in New York City in 1876 and its law faculty in 1878. He was admitted to the bar in 1878 and then began practicing in New York City. The following year he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1880 for the 47th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Edwin Einstein on March 4, 1881 . After his time in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in New York City and also went into real estate business. In 1885 he refused the post of State Commissioner of Immigration . On October 1, 1907, he opened the luxurious "Hotel Savoy" on Fifth Avenue in New York City, which he owned and where he lived for the rest of his life. It was renamed the Plaza in 1920 and featured in the novels " The Great Gatsby " and "Eloise" as well as in the films " The Invisible Third " and " Kevin - Alone in New York ". The plaza was named a Manhattan National Historic Landmark in 1986.
