Edward Haight

Edward Haight (born March 26, 1817 in New York City , † September 15, 1885 in Westchester , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Haight was born and raised in New York City about two years after the end of the British-American War . During this time he attended community schools and worked in a counting house from a young age . Later he was a wholesaler for dry goods and pursued banking transactions. In 1850 he moved to Westchester. He was a director of the National Bank of New York . Then he founded the Bank of the Commonwealth of New York City in 1856 and was its president until 1870.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party at that time . In the 1860 congressional elections for the 37th Congress , Haight was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded John B. Haskin on March 4, 1861 . In 1862 he ran for the Republican Party for the 38th Congress . After an unsuccessful election, he left the Congress on March 3, 1863 .

After his time at the Congress, he sat on the boards of several banks and insurance companies. He died on September 15, 1885 in Westchester and was then buried in Trinity Church Cemetery in New York City.
