David B. Mellish

David Batcheller Mellish (born January 2, 1831 in Oxford , Massachusetts , † May 23, 1874 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives in 1873 and 1874 .

Career

David Batcheller Mellish attended public schools. He trained as a printer in Worcester and then taught in schools in Massachusetts, Maryland and Pennsylvania . Then he moved to New York City , where he worked as proofreaders ( proofreader worked). Mellish was a reporter for the New York Tribune . He then worked as a stenographer for the New York City Police Department for ten years . In 1871 he was appointed Assistant Appraiser for Merchandise in the Port of New York . Politically, he belongs to the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1872 for the 43rd Congress Mellish was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the ninth constituency of New York, where he succeeded Fernando Wood on March 4, 1873 . However, he died on May 23, 1874 in Washington DC and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Auburn .
