John Evert Van Alen House

John Evert Van Alen (* 1749 in Kinderhook , New York Province; † February 27, 1807 in Defreestville , New York ) was an American surveyor, cartographer, lawyer and politician . Between 1793 and 1799 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Evert Van Alen grew up during the British colonial era. He completed his preliminary studies. During the War of Independence he moved to Defreestville in 1778, where he bought a large estate and did extensive farming. Van Alen carried out surveying work in the planned town of Greenbush in 1790 and opened a grocery store there after its completion . He worked as a civil engineer and cartographer. In this context, he conducted initial assessments of many cities in upstate New York. He also held local offices. In 1791 he was assistant judge in Rensselaer County .

Politically, he was a member of the pro-administration faction at the time. In the congressional elections of 1792 Van Alen was elected in the seventh constituency of New York to the US House of Representatives, which was still in Philadelphia at the time , where he took office on March 4, 1793 as the first member of this district to serve. His political affiliation changed to the Federalist Party . He successfully ran in the elections of 1794 and 1796 as a candidate for this party for election. Van Alen was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1800 and 1801 . He died on February 27, 1807 in Defreestville and was buried there in the Bloomington Rural Cemetery . His nephew Evert Van Allen was his heir since he had no children.
